'Patterdale' Eye colour.

Recommended Posts

In years gone by, I remember the one thing which did stand out was how dark and soul-less their Eyes were. Some of the Terriers from a distance looked as though they just had black holes in their Heads. Some of the reasonable 'digging dogs' I have had over the years had really dark, almost black Eyes. It was a trait I looked for in a so called 'Patterdale', in fact when I picked a Pup it nearly always had 'black' Eyes. Any lines around now still with the dark Eyes?

A member on here commented how they tried to pick a pup with out red/orange eyes.

I know what you mean by the red eyed thing, but as long as they do the do, thats whats important.

Is it a bull trait??

Over many years there has been a lot of hybridising and then breeding back to either the Sire or Dams side. Some of my 'better' Terriers have had as dark an Eye as you can get and the majority of not so good have had brown, yellow and 'cur' looking Eyes. The majority of my Terriers have also been black, for the same reason as my Eye preference. Due to the amount and different types of Terrier I have had, it can't be all coincidence when a really dark Eyed Terrier turns out to be one of the better ones. When you are picking a 9 or 10 week old Pup, there has to be certain traits you prefer to see.....one thing I liked to see was a really, really dark Eye. I have seen a few good 'Bulls' with brown or 'cur' looking Eyes, so I personally don't think it is a 'Bull thing' in the Patterdale.......prefer to think of the dark Eyes being a 'pure' black Family trait, nothing else added. I have seen mixed Litters of Eye colour, but in those instances I believe the black Eye being a 'throw back' to the Pups Ancestors in 'purer' times?..........Who knows, personal opinion.

The old pictures i have of my dogs you can just make out they've got eyes lol, they had tiny beady eyes like old brock, the dogs i have now have mainly orange eyes, theres still a few here with the black eyes but not many.

I don't know if i could ever get away from the orange eye, as long as they work who cares it's only cosmetic.

I agree that Eye colours are purely cosmetic, but certain cosmetic traits point to 'Ancestry'. I am not talking about how they are put together necessarily or thier Show worthiness, but certain 'Family' traits which come out in the better individuals. One example is in 'Honeybunch' bred Bulldogs, they have a Family trait of having a strip of black Fur run a third of the length of the Tails and a black Mask. Not all, but quite a few of the tightly bred 'Honeybunch' stuff does.......looking a lot like she did. The majority marked that way seem to be 'keepers', could be Kennel blindness but we are always looking for the 'Grail' in whatever.

That is what I mean about Eye colour, as far as cosmetic looks go 'Busterdog'.

Agree totaly mate, if i could get away from this side of the family of dogs i've got i would, i saw the red eye coming in years ago in Stevens yard and didn't like it one bit, i suppose it's the price i've got to pay for sticking to a line (all be it a poor one).

id say any connection between eyecolour and ability is only coincidental-then again thinking of bulldogs, dogs ive seen with 1 blue eye all had a serious bite on them
