Specimen salmon of 22 lbs. from the Owenduff River (Shean Fishery)

March was a particularly dry month with water levels almost at summer levels, and there was very little angling pressure. The weather broke on 31st March giving better fishing conditions. During the week 7 fish were caught on the Lodge Beat, all in the 7 to 10 lb range with the exception of one magnificent salmon weighing 22 lbs caught by the Clonmel angler Philip Maher on fly. This is the heaviest fish landed on this beat for at least 45 years. A number of fish were also lost. The lower Beat also produced 3 good fish again in the 7 to 10 lb range. Prospects for the season are very encouraging.

What would yo class that as Niall? Certainly doesn't look like a springer going by the pic, could it be a baggot?

the full report can be read here: http://www.fishinginireland.info/update/salmon_angling.htm

it is only this year i got intrested in the salmon, after watching them on a few of the local rivers here and only last week i caught my 1 salmon while out trolling for trout.

it was just short of 7lb and gave me the fight of my life.

That fish is not a baggot but a kelt and if it did wiegh 22lbs would of been close to 30lb when it first entered the river ....Hopefully the lad returned it so it could continue its journey back to the sea
