Marksman and Festas latest prowlings.....

Recommended Posts

Hi guys....

Well, the weekend is upon us again and only one thing springs to mind for us two and thats getting out there!!

Not so much to the fact I work away from home more or less all week now but I can't even find the time to sleep in my own bed with the wife on a Friday night, I'd rather be on the prowl with wor kid....Good job I've got a VERY understanding wife!! :notworthy:

Anyway, we thought we'd give our local permission a try as we'd never been for about 6-8 weeks.

Wor kid arrived at mine at 2330hrs as I was busy sharpening my knife. "Bit of a bad night for going tonight" he said, I saw what he meant as I went outside to load the gear in the van, the moon was lighting everything up, it was just starting to rain and a slight westerly wind meant that whatever direction we entered the permission from the noise & our scent would travel straight towards the warrens.

Not to be deterred we hit the ground just after midnight. Our usual 30m zero and radio checks completed and we split up with wor kid going South and myself North.

I made my way round the back of the old yard and actually managed to make the crossing of the small stream without getting wet....unlike last time :icon_redface:

As I clambered up to the top of the small hill I scanned the ground with the NV to be confronted with my first target which was hidden from view by the entwining marsh grass but the visible bead was clearly visible. I estimated this to be approx 35m. I slowly dropped to the kneeling position, centered the NV crosshair just behind the bead, gave a little holdover and squeezed the trigger......

Wor kid mustn't have been far away as he came over the radio "Is that your first one already??" "Bloody hope so!! Hang on mate, its still there" I replied. This time I aimed bang on and took another shot and again it just sat there......

Was my zero way out???... All sorts of things were running though my head now, Had I totally missed twice or did I hit it the first time??

I scanned the ground again to make sure there were no other potential targets about and got up to retrieve my prize.......... What happened next was a moment of shame or at the time a comical experience. The NV had picked up the silver foil from a packet of Hula Hoops which had 2 nicely placed holes in it :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

Experience on my part would have said to make sure you have a legitimate target and know what you were aiming at before firing but if I hadnt have told this part of the night I'm dman sure wor kid would have!!

So, back to the prowl I went, wor kid had 1 within the first 1/2 hour and I was playing catchup. I skirted round the bottom of the hill trying to keep on the best side of the wind and stopped at the top of a depression. It wasnt long before I centered on a bunny happily munching away along with 3 of its mates. Bang on zero range, the picture in the NV was crystal clear. I put the S10 on the bipod and managed to lay prone, the crosshair placed on the killzone and the shot was released to see the bunny flop with a 1 legged salute. I was off the mark :toast: The other 2 just sat there and didn't know what was happening till I took out another one. The third then quite wisely decided this was no place for hanging around and gave it legs before I could get centered back on it. As the night progressed and a few more bunnies presented themselves at different ranges with the furthest of mine being an estimated 40-45m which was paced out at 47 paces on retrieval and a clean heart shot on another at 30m brought my bag to a pleasing 7 bunnies in total so far.

A trip back to the van at 0330hrs ("half time") saw me with 7 and wor kid with 2. He swapped rifles from his HW100 to the AA S200 with the scopecam fitted. Another check of zero and we were back out again for round 2.

Wor kid and I both managed another 1 each before we called it a day as I had to get back home for "kid" duties as the wife was off to work and wor kid's NV was playing up..... Well...it does help if the batteries you have are decent (Sorry mate...had to get that one in :whistling: :whistling: )

11 in total, not bad for a few hours prowling an a permission we had let rest for a few weeks and a lesson learnt on my half which was easily forgettable once the adrenalin kicked in and that shiny bead appeared on the crosshairs.

As with all our posts both wor kid and myself tell it like it is.... a truthful description of our night out even with the bad bits in it.

We certainly arent perfect at what we do and we like to show others that may think they are making a mistake or not doing something correctly that it can happen to anyone at any time.

As usual here's the end of night bag....
