Recommended Posts

just been reading the DEAD WOOD post and its got me thinking, what does a dog have to do to make it a good dog. ive only seen about 10 dogs work properly and mainly lamping, so what most a good daytime dog do i.e catch rate, from what distance etc.

everyone has different standards and views. if your dog reaches your standards and you are happy with it thats all that matters.the dog only has to please you whatever your standards are not the rest

a dog that does its job regularly in the dead of winter.and always gives its all

What's the defination a good dog? - Going by the other DEAD WOOD post one that manages to make it into it's dotage and to pass away at your feet. And if it goes for that 'final walk in the woods' it ain't a goodun. Got f**k all to do with the owner tho!!!

Agree with the others, if it pleases you then what more can you want from the dog?

I class my pup as a gooden. He is only 7 months but I know he will be with me until the end, wether it's next week he runs into a tree and breaks his kneck or at the age of 15 by the fire.

He has taught me so much as a first lurcher already, he is good with stock, walks off the lead anywhere, he will tear off if he sees another dog but always comes back, he is already showing alot of interest daytime, marking up and chasing anything that moves, likewise he has been out watching the lamp and showing alot of interest, aswell as being silent day, night, car or kennel, his retrieval skills leave alot to be desired and I'm still working on this, also when a daytime walk is over he wont get back in the car and plays deaf. Again, something I'm working on. The bond we have is huge and it is starting to show in the field now, I'm hoping this all aids with the retrieve.

For some lads his level of obedience would be simply unacceptable, for some lads he would be useless because he isn't doing single handed reds yet, but for me he is the definition of good dog.
