What is to old???? There is need to put any dog down when they get on in years.People should know when there dog is getting on a bit and bring a pup though when your older dog is getting on a bit.For example my bitch was 5 1/2 years old so l breed her and kept a pup back she now 6 1/2 and brought the pup though for me the pup now 1 1/2 . When the pup is 5 1/2 l do the same all over again. And my old bitch when she does not have it any more or is feeling the strain she be sprayed and brought in doors and live out the rest her life in the house with the kids.

I understand if a dog is hurt and cant do its job and needs put to sleep but no dog needs put to sleep because its got on a bit in the years.

I hate this am putting him or her to a retirement home what a load :censored: .After years off hard work for you how can anyone just kick them to the side that is why dog homes are full off luchers.

The saying (OUT OF SITE OUT OF MIND COMES INTO PLAY THERE).

completly agree. i never had the kennel room for a number of dogs.that is what i did as the above quote.but i would buy in a pup as i have never bred dogs.

I understand what your saying But if this animal in question has put its back out, gave all it had Everytime you were out then it deserves to be with you until its not anymore in my opinion

The way l look at it you have had your dog or bitch from 8 weeks old it as giving you some off the best days you can remember in your life. They always give you something to talk about good or bad an

last trip to the vets doesnt have to be stressfull if the dogs a worker itl be used to being in the back of the pickup just ring the vet and ask them to come out to the jeep and jab the dog there and

in my eyes if it was a real good dog your keep it till it died but if it was a average do ya get rid of it when its past its sellbuy date ?

thats the way to be Im affraid, A bad or retierd dog takes as much room and food as a good one, if you look on them as a pet thats diffrent all together.

I couldnt get rid but im soft plus im off the opinion the dogs worked its arse off for you for years then it deserves a little in return its not hard.I know a few real good dogmen who have more than one retired worker and pay huge vet bills to keep the dog fit and well.Takes a good owner to do it and understanding of the dog at the very least if you must part ways then find a good pet home with people who know what theyre doing dont hand it to the first ass that phones.

My bitch was 6 years old and carrying an injury that virtually curtailed her hunting days,i put a litter through her with the idea to use her to bring the pups on when the time arrived, she became a real bully with the pups and their progress was being hampered, she would never have made a suitable pet,the last walk a dog takes can be the hardest one you may have to take but a responsible owner as to make that decision.Id retire a dog to a suitable pet home if possible,if not then a sad,sad walk with fond memories of days in the field.I personally would'nt keep a retired animal, they take up kennel space that is being utilised by the next generation,i care for them just as much as the next man,but at the end of the day they are a working animal and unlike some not a member of the family.

best post on this, this man looks like ha has fellings for his dogs but does not let that cloud his judgement = a kennel of dogs fit for perpouse.

Agree, best post, well said lads.

If i can not rehome as a good pet home, its the other choice, not a easy one at that!

Depends on how many strings your dog has to it's bow. My 15yr old can hardly get up to a trot these days but I wouldn't be without her on a ferreting trip her nose still works fine. To many folk see their dog as a commodity easily disposed off. I wonder how many dogs they go through in a lifetime.

Fair play...

I tend to want my money's worth out of a work dog :D

I invariably keep them for years,..long after their sell by date,..and they frequently waddle about,.doing feck all, and generally getting in the way,..bit like me....

But when the time comes,..they go,.. quick,...

I agree with a lot of what you say mate but the only way I would put a dog down is if it was unable to function properly. I know the day will come when I have a decision to make but when that day does come she will deserve a lot more than a one way walk to the woods.
