The Molepile Strikes Back...

Recommended Posts

Forecast, overcast, wind 5-8mph, but in the wrong direction, blowing across the field into the edge where the rabbits are. Do I chance it? Of course I do! Still hunting for the Moby Bun after bagging one of it's babies (picture below), I set up at the top end of the paddock. Bag down, mat out, and zero checked I waited...

Baby Moby...

I was waiting when a couple of kits popped up, playing about. 1 pellet took care of one, the other sat there. So I gave it a pellet as well (share and share alike). There had not been too much activity at the top end recently so I decided to move down the field. Now cover is scarce to non existant, with wind blowing to the rabbits they were on alert. So I decided to look for some way to break up my silhouette and shape. I saw a thistle bush! Now it may not be the best cover or the biggest cover, but by using this dessicated, thorn clad remenant I thought I might stand a chance.

Cover? Ouch!

A doe and kit came out of the edge. I took careful aim at the doe, click, thwack and she was down. The kit scarpered as soon as mother hit the deck, so I waited to see if anything else was coming out, as nothing was I retrieved the doe and moved it back to the bag. Back up the field and into position I got behind my bush and started to scan the edges. Now it does pay to know your permission, as I saw a bump in the edge that was not there previously. What is more this bump suddenly produced a pair or ears. It would not turn left or right, but the head kept coming up then going back down to feed. I lined the Tasco crosshairs up and up it came again, click, thwack, right in the back of the head, 1 buck rabbit bit the grass! So a quiet afternoon, apart from some of our wonderful boys in blue dogfighting in the clouds, so an air display was included as well.

End bag!

There are two big black rabbits out on my permission, one at the top corner of the paddock and the second, slightly smaller is in the woods I recently got permission on. So I know there are two in this area. There was a larger black kit, but someone who roost shoots with a 12 bore took it out on a three quarter choke shot! The black kit is about half the size of the older one that was blown up by a 12 bore!
