I am afraid this is the kind of badly informed information you can get from people not in the know   Cooked bones are dangerous, so never give these Raw bones especially non weight baring ones(nec

Aye - you've got in in one there mate. I'm old enough to remember when there was only 2/3 brands of complete food on the market - Wilson's and Happidog are two I recall. The complete food market is a

In my head, i liken it to eating fish, i love fish, eat plenty of different sorts, so theres always a chance I might choke on a fish bone, but haven't in 38 years, and will continue to eat fish.

ive worked at numerous rescue centres and kennels over the years, ive seen a couple of cases of bones damaging the mouths of dogs, but its fairly rare. i wouldnt advise giving bones id just make sure you supervise the dog whilst its eating them.

are you for real,so your telling us to watch our dogs while they eat a bone, well i surpose thats ok if its off a sparrow

I have heard of a few dogs injuring themselves with bone but it has always been with cooked bone splintering and cutting or sticking into the gum. That is why we feed raw bones only.

I've been feeding raw for about twelve years or so and have not had any problems in all that time: touch wood!

However, before feeding raw I once gave a cooked bone, the kind you get in pet shops, to a lurcher and noticed a few minutes later he was pawing at the side of his muzzle. I had a closer look and discovered that the bone had snapped in half and the remaining half, which was a kind of tunnel shape, was the perfect fit for his top jaw. :o As a result the bone was wedged firmly in place and the only way to get it out was by using a screwdriver as there was just enough space between his jaw and the bone to slide it in and lever it out. I'm just grateful he was such an easy going, friendly chap as I can imagine a lot of dogs wouldn't have taken kindly to me doing this.

The vet is this case is an idiot.

Raw bones are fine, cooked bones are a risk because cooking dries out the bone and causes it to shatter into shards which can cause problems. I am staggered that someone who is allegedly trained in animal physiology could say that raw bones are a danger to a dog. Change vets immediately. They are suspect and I wouldn't allow someone that dumb anywhere near a decent dog. Mine get whatever they get, sometimes dry dog food, sometimes wild pork (bristles, bone, meat everything). The biggest problem with dog diet is not the diet, it's the exercise (or lack of it) they get.

Cheers.

Up to 4m we used to put everything through a blender or an old mincer: raw meat, cooked meat, blood and fat, stock, dog biccies, eggs and shells, bread, some small bones, small amounts of veg peelings, table scraps. After 4m we just mix it all up for him in a bowl (obviously without the bones, he gets one of them each evening). Might not work for everyone but works for us..... :whistling:
