Two piece shovels

Just recently I've made my shovels split into two pieces so I can put them in a rucksack out of sight. They screw back together just as strong as before, if anyone is interested and anyone is prepared to give me a basic ABC of how to post a photo I will put some pictures up of how it's been done. The bits to do the job cost me three quid and it only takes half an hour and it keeps them out of sight of nosey c**ts.

I got one of those fold-ups from ex military, £ 7-99, never let me down. But to be fair, I don't do a lot off digging.

Even spades that are supposedly top quality break, so I wouldn't waste my money on those pissy little army jobs. Those Wilkinson Sword 15 year guarantee jobs don't last long either when you are in the roots

i used to carry a darby foldong shovel with the head that can sit flush or at aright angle also one side is serated and can cut roots alos the head at aright angle is great for readin out also for breaking through going into hevy cover as a machete and it fold up and fits in agame pocket out of site.

This is the one i made below, ideal for throwing over your shoulder in an old ferret bag, i have been using this quite alot lately if the dogs mark a rat down by my local river, and as wilky says in his post when screwed back together it is just as strong.

Cooper really simple to do mate, just cut your spade/shovel in half and then get some threaded pipe, weld one bit to the top and bottom, then get your insert and thread it onto the bottom bit and weld it on to make it more secure, job done.

arent you best of lining the top half up with the bottom half before welding so that when your finished you spade is straight if you know what I mean.

I do vertually the same as sindasox, except there is no welding and the joint is tighter and smoother, no offence intended because your shovel looks fine. I'm at work on nights all weekend so I'll put some pictures on later, but basically you need two 3/4" BSP brass sockets and a 3/4" BSP double ended male gas pipe joint, the shovels I've used are Bulldog steel shafted and it's as simple as this.

 

1 - Cut the shovel in half

2 - Take one of the brass sockets and hammer it into the handle end of the shovel, using a piece of timber so you don't damage the thread, it really is a tight fit and you'll never get it out once it's in.

3 - Wrap six or seven layers of PTFE around one end of the gas pipe joint and screw it into the handle right up to the hilt.

4 - Screw the other brass socket onto the handle joint as far as it goes and then offer up the blade end of the shovel and mark the brass joint and the blade so that when you screw them together they line up.

5 - Unscrew the joint off the handle and then hammer it into the blade end of the shovel lining up the marks, once again it's as tight as the proverbial camels arse. And that's it, it's as strong as it was before and because the sockets are internal the joint is very tidy.

I did a roundmouth just after Christmas and three of us gave it some hammer right up to knocking off and it was just as good as a one piece shovel, so now I've done all my shovels, and if you get lazy you can take two or three blades and just one handle, roundmouth, grafter and small spit.

 

If it helps I bought the fittings from Dixon Halls and they have shops all up and down the country, but any good plummers merchants should do and the first shovel I did I cut in half and took the handle with me to get the right fittings and they cost less then three quid per shovel.

I got one of the german army shovels near the end of last season - they're not to bad - the ground was fairly hard around that time - hadn't rain for about 6 weeks - so the pick side of it is handy.

They also fold at a right angle if you want like the Gofa shovel.

Furthest I dug with it was about 3' and it was fairly awkward at that.

 

A few of the lads have them now - good to get a dig started while someone brings on the proper stuff - noting worse than following the hounds all day carrying a shovel.

I wouldn`t like to trust one as anything with a join in my eyes has a weakness.....Even if it is just to have tucked away we all know that the quick shallow digs always turn in to,a b*****d and i would bet that you would still be walking back to the motor or house to get some proper tools even if you took the fold up but maybe not,would be great if they was strong enough but i cant see how they are........
