wormster 0
hi folks brand new to this so u might hav 2 bere with me, i hav a 6 month old sluki x saluki/ whippettxcollie, first question does this make him a longdog or lurcher? his father was pretty tall about 27" n he looks as though he,l become a lanky b*****d aswell. second question, do people think his height may affect his ability catch small game like rabbits or does it all just depend on the individual dog? hes my fist longdog/lurcher so any advice on how to build up to his first kill would be great, thanks wormster Quote Link to post
DogMagic 461
A longdog is a dog with only sighthound blood in it, yours also has collie so its a lurcher. My dogs 26 inches and he is dynamite on rabbits so dont worry about the height, it wont be a problem. If the dog wants to do it, it will do it. Right now bond with the dog, make it love you and see you as the sourse of all things good. Training is the key now. Sit, stay, come here. Then training to do those commands to the whistle. Rabbit skins wrapped around dummies, plenty of praise when he brings it back. A trip out ferreting later on will be a good thing, the rabbit hits the net so it aint going anywhere but the dog dont know that. He catches it and its easy and you give shedloads of praise before resetting the net. I try to get a pup out ferreting for at least an hour every day. Your going to walk him anyway, just take the ferret and a handfull of nets too! Sooner or later a rabbit is going to pop out of a hole you didnt notice and the dog will have a chance to find out what rabbits are REALLY all about! Lol! He probably wont catch it, sit and wait for the outcome. If he catches it or not let him come back to you and give shedloads of praise again. After a few of these a night on the lamp wouldnt hurt, if you have a mate with an experienced lamp dog for the pup to watch so much the better. Quote Link to post
