A pest control job on the new permission and some woodys

I'm new to shooting completely and after some grouping work, which I got down to about an inch at 30yards, I went out in the field.

I've had some success but the errors are still there. I've taken home 1 buck and 2 kits (none of which seemed to be the cleanest of kills depending on what is a rabbit still alive and what is one kicking from nerves) but I've hit another adult that managed to vanish under some gorse and I've hit two more kits that also fell into or made it to holes.

It's not that I worry that people will turn their nose up at my amateur attempts or will lambast me for inhumane killing or unethical kit killing. Most of the time it seems boring to read about my 4 hours shooting baby rabbits that fall in holes :)

IMO it makes sense to challenge the legal side of shooting such as out of season kills but you do think twice posting about your efforts when there are loads of posts and videos of multi bags shot from 50+ yds. Just take the plunge ;)

I've found it to be generally a good community on here so far. People are helpful and knowledgeable, their not afraid to challenge stuff which I think is okay as long as people don't take it the wrong way. Everyone is different with different values. It would boring any other way :)

Hmmm OK,   So seems this forum is properly split on the kit debate. Get chunks ripped off you for shooting em and chunks ripped out of you when you don't!   I'm sure Si was acting under the genera

its very important for thing to be challenged... but only when the facts are there.

"now, probably opening a can of worms here, but you shoot a woodie at the start of video :hmm: now you'll already know that woodies cannot be shot for sport, only pest control, :hmm: yet it cant be for crop protection in a garden, so it could only be for health and safety issues, ie gauno, yet couldent see mountains of pigeon poo anywhere"

well my point is.

this is not your adverage back garden this is a huge garden with high walls and ramparts devided into many sections, from one short clip,it been decided that there are no crops or vegtiables patches or the likes and there is no pigeon poo...all very well noticed from the arm chair.

the actual fact is the poor coulpe cant plant anything seed or other wise as is eaten or sh#t on within houers by the hords of rabbits pigeons corvids and the likes.. and as for no pigeon poo  have you ever seen white evergreen trees. there white from top to bottom in places from all the crap, there is not one square foot of the place that hasent got pigeon poo on it,,,,,ask Si he managed to lie in some  .

i just dont belive that poeple should be comenting on what should and shouldent be done on other peoples permission thay have never seen,or have spoken to the owners off...(or the adjoining land owners that may want different things where an amout of dicresion from the shooter is required to keep both parteys happy).

this as always is my view and opinion

or may be iv got it on me a little.....but as i said to Si yesterday i dont think he should be haveing to pull his post all the time...but that as always is his desision.

anyhow thats me done on the matter..

Stubby nothing personal mate

all the best

Andy - Nail - head - Hit :) Its easy to criticise from a distance, when you dont know the true and full facts.

On the otherside of the coin however I can see why the moderation team may have concerns:

Shooting Times 13th April Page 13 under the banner "Have your say". Read it and all will fit into place.

Dont have the shooting times mate and not about to run out to get it so how's about a quick overview?

Survey if the mod for it was illegal and thus damaging to the sport the post should of been removed?

On the contrary he asked why si removed it.

... this section is only kept alive by the regulars si has put alot of time and effort into this section as have the other regulars, the mods need to remember this because if it wasnt for the regulars putting there time and effort they would not have anything to moderate .

i think its only fair the stubbys goes through the entire archive and asks everyone who has shot a woody or a kit to remove there post then go onto all the other sections and do the same i mean if its 1 rule for 1 its 1 rule for everyone ....

Hi lads,

The footage of the deleted clip will be put in DVD 5 (A Man And His Air Rifle) with some other stuff that me and Rossy08 have been busy filming over the past few days, so those who never got the chance to see it will be able to see it when the dvd is finished.

(For crop protection) Just in case some query my reasons.

I shot a lased 48 metre pigeon 2 days ago, witnessed by Andy, for stealing food and it was dead on pellet impact.

Was a peach of a shot with the r10 and the new Hawke Nite Eye 4-16x50 AO IR scope. X6 mag and 2 and 3/4 mildots hold over.

Me and Rossy have also had quite a few rabbits too on scope camera both day and night time.

Thanks Andy for witnessing the problem on the permission and seeing the extent of the problems and thanks Gary for your kind words mate.

Si.

Personally I can't see the big deal about any of it, its easy to be pedantic ??? I shoot all year round myself, especially rabbits and pigeons..I've seen people leave rabbits to build up for them to have some sport and others clear them totally..Oh and the pigeons... get them shot..

I think everyone has taken my words in the wrong text, maybe my fault for being a crap writer, or theirs for not reading it fully before seeing red

firstly I have no problem with anyone shooting either rabbits or pigeons, do it myself all the time

the point I was trying to make, lets see if it comes across better this time

pigeon shooting can only be done for crop protection, ie pest control, but lets be honest, pigeon shooting is fun, even small bags which are in no way helping protect crops, but we still do it, and just stick the "pest control" label on it, Ive got no problem with that what-so-ever, therefore no reason to remove video's

rabbits are a pest species, they can be controlled in any manner of ways, again, enjoyment can be gained from it, the point I was trying to get across, that so many seemed to miss, was the words PEST CONTROL and UNSPORTING

sports shooting is a term alot of people use when shooting flying stuff, you'll see people kick off if someone shoots a pheasant on the ground, saying the bird should be made to fly before shooting, otherwise its unsporting

therefore the point I was trying to get across was how can you say, its unsporting to shoot baby rabbits, yet shoot a pigeon sitting in a tree, and not class that as unsporting, I have no problem with shooting any quarry, be it in the air, or on the ground, but I would never use the word unsporting to describe a job titled "pest control" the two don't go together an never will

hope that clears it up a bit

hello there mate.

i have no problem in what you say re the "pest control" and unsporting, as these are Si's words and thus why i dident comment about them,,,i did read you post fully and understood where your comming from.

i only have/had the problem with the bit that i quoted you on,,,,which if your honest im right about,,,,,you can not see a very small part of the permission and then decide if its right or wrong and what the reason is for it....

ie,,, i could show you a pic of part of my permission,,,,you say theres no crops and i shouldent be shooting pigeons,..i turn round with the camera and theres crops as far as the eye can see.,,

ill find a couple of pics to confirm my point....

this is not an argument this is a discussion...all party's are granted there right for free speach and are entitled to an opinion.....

there like arsehole every one has one and sometimes there full off sh#t....(i no myn is at times)

fair point, but your dragging the argument/discussion onto another permission, in the opening post, the op described it as a customers garden, this is what I was basing my argument on, irrelivent of weather its surrounded by fields or not, the old saying, "the customer is always right"

a stupid scenario, but say a customer asks me to clear a rat problem, if I entered into it just as a shooter and told the customer such, then Id feel free to shoot as I wish, however, if I went in quoting pest control, but then, did'nt shoot/harm any baby rats, as I saw it as UNSPORTING, would the customer feel happy, or miffed that prehaps I wasent helping them in any way (weather it was paid or free)

this was my point with the op's video, nothing to do with anyone else's permission, but this one, truthfully, would anyone search, ask for permission to control pests, but then say to the land owner, before you give me permission, I'll not be shooting the baby rabbits, which will multiply from one pair to 400 in a 2yr cycle, you'd keep shum on the matter, get the permission, and carry on the way you wanted, until of course the farmer/customer noticed that there was still quite a few young ones running around destroying his crops/garden,

It is a choice for land owner and shooter to make. Mrs Mole will never shoot a kit, me on the other hand, I have been told by the land owner to shoot anything that looks like a rabbit, hops like a rabbit and breeds like a rabbit. So I shoot kits! It is what the land owner asked me to do. There are so many down there this year that my shooting is probably having a lot less impact than the Stoats (also not shot). I enjoy my hunting and I am there at the land owners permission, so I obey their wishes (and sometimes stop up rabbit scrapes when they occur in the paddock).

The rabbits are breeding like erm, rabbits, and there are loads of kits. I think Stubby missed something in the license on wood pigeon shooting, public safety. The damned things fly into cars and can cause accidents, the land owner might have a bird phobia, all of this is a hazard to public safety! But what Stubby is merely raising is a legal tecnicality as are the points I raised in favour of shooting.
