Getting my dog in the water

Recommended Posts

My JRT was like this, don't just throw em in, mine once fell in and panicked so much she nearly drown mate and it might just make him even more scared of it. It's just time they'll go in eventually try him in shallow water first put him in it and try and show him it aint that bad, hot days are the best time to do this as they'll see how nice the water is too cool them down.

Yeah i understand, cheers mate.

I took him to the beach yesterday and the tide was coming in nice and slowly. I stood in the water and as the tide touched his feet he'd step back a few paces haha.

I'm gonna go in n take him with me when the weather improves. Cheers

Many pups take a while to like water. Don't forget too that the sea is always a lot colder than still fresh water. Pups can become chilled very quickly due to their small body mass. I don't really expect mine to go into the lakes and start swimming until they are about 6 months old. Some do it sooner, but I make sure they don't stay in too long and wait for really hot days when they'll want to cool down.

Nobody told my terriers that they shouldn't like water! I guess it has a lot to do with how they are brought up: I can't keep mine out of the lakes except when it is really really cold in mid winter.

terriers in general dont like water dont worry about it its not as if your gonna use it as wildfowling dog i always just let them suit them selves if they chase after something and it goes in water if they want it bad enough they will go in

Cant keep mine out of water.2 of them will retrieve ducks out of water on the coldest day.

Tyla's Ollie would rather swim than walk

He's 4 and a half months now. Patterdale x Lakey

I'd just like him to go into the water but hes shit scared of it.

A friend said just throw him in a pond or a lake.

What are you views on it?

throw your mate in the lake or pond and then throw him a bag of cement

One thing's guaranteed - if you throw it in - which I know you won't - it'll be shit scared for the rest of it's life. Encourage it to follow an older dog into the water. You'll have to get wet yourself too. My old Border terrier was - and probably still would be if given half a chance - fanatical about water and would spend hours and hours in and out of rivers. Patience and time!
