Trade in the army

Anyone been in the army and learnt a trade and came out to find work? Only ask as been looking at it but dont want to come out to nothing to be honest. Would want to come out and be able to get a straight foward job working for plimco or something doing plumbing. Thing is the qualifications shown on the army website dont seem to match those needed for the job type thing...really i just wish it said plumber and at the end you can get the job as a plumber but all that city and guilds and nvq bollocks seems confusing to know exactly what is needed.

I am popping down to my local center on thursday. From looking online i want to do an insight course which is just a 1 week course showing you some what life in the royal engineers. I would like to be able to come out of the army knowing I wont have any worries about getting a job. I was hoping learn a trade such as a plumber or electrician. Trouble I have is I dont see what are the exact required city and guilds for these jobs so dont know if the ones earned through the army can apply? I've tried looking online and no luck in finding exactly what is needed. Prehaps anyone one here in any of the careers can post.

 

Here is whats said for the electrician;

 

Variety of driving licences

Military Engineer (Engineer) Class 2

Foundation Modern Apprenticeship (FMA)

Military Engineer (Combat) Class 3

City & Guilds Parts 1 and 2 Electrical Installations

NVQ Level 2 in IT

 

For the plumber:

 

Category B driving licence

Military Engineer (Heating and Plumbing) Class 2

Foundation Modern Apprenticeship (FMA)

Military Engineer (Combat) Class 3

Level 2 certificate in Basic Plumbing Studies

NVQ Level 2 in IT

 

 

Know i can ask all this stuff down the center but as ive not been before im not sure if youll just get told what you want to hear to get you signed up.

Qualifications may come and go ................. (I've got plenty of O Levels, but no fecker knows what they are anymore)

 

What you'd be doing in the Army is proving you have discipline and application, and that alone should stand you in a better place once you leave (if you don't stay in)

 

Have a look at the Millitary Police, a good mate of mine was in for 22 years, came out and is now on really big money working for a private security contractor over in NI.

 

Get it done! You might get mistaken for Harry Wales, but apart from that it'll all be good!

You might get the qualifications in the RE but you wont have the experinece. You'll spend your career concreating or labouring and on tour sand bagging. Also you'll have a long wait to get in, in which you could of been to college, gained the qualifications, you'll still have you legs and wont have had to put up with the army bullshit. As already said though, alot of civi companys look at ex mil as the dogs bollocks for disipline etc, but thats what happened when your bullshitted about day in day out, I don't think they realise how little actually gets done on camp, small things are just blown up to waste the day and keep you busy. One thing though, you'll get good at playing hide and seek

REME all the way mate. I was in the REME for 5 years as a recovery mechanic. Personally this was a good trade to do as you can walk straight into civvi street with the qualifications you get. But personally I would become vehicle mechanic class B, which is wheeled vehicles instead of tracked. And you will have a very good footing to get a mechanic job. But if you want to be a plumber then go Royal engineers but like has been said, you will not do much plumbing if Im honest with you.

Will it be different if i choose the elecrtician route? I dont mind getting my hands dirty that comes with the job i'd just not like to be used type thing. I would hate to come out of the army and be at square one having risked my life and done years for my country rather than sitting on the dole and selling drugs like most in my area.

ive been in the contracting industry as a electrician for 31 years. i do have sympathy for young lads trying to get into the game as the job market at the moment is poor. you would have to go to college to gain nvqs.plus training courses for safety certificates cherry picker licenses etc.now i dont know what type of training and experience of electrical work you would get in the army. but one place that are very keen on ex army tradesmen is the prison service as a maintenance electrician or plumber chef whatever trade. the pay isnt great but is a close to permanent job as you could get in this day and age. whatever path you choose i wish you luck.

I thought the job titles given in the army would fit civvi so that you'd be able to find work when you leave. I see adverts for courses all the time and if I had a price given too me then I would easily be able to save the money needed but I thought a benefit of the army would be the experience that i'd be able to say i have had...sounds like i just want to use the army but its more to do with making sure i'm not just used and then no better off than when i joined. I'd be quiting a job to go into the army but im bored shitless with it and just life at the moment if im honest.

I think many employers see ex-army as a safe pair of hands, a team player.

If you come out and apply for jobs with civvy blokes with same qualifications, you'll have a headstart, i reckon .

Army sparkys are not as well trained as civi ones and nowhere near as experience. Things in the army are done to pass the test, if you fail you get the answers and re take the test until you pass. Not exaclty best practice at actually learning something. Courses are compact and rushed in order to get you out into the field army and on tour ASAP, your no use in training. You are there for the armys disposal, once your no use its see you later. Look at all the WO's and Staff Sergants recently f****d off, do you really think they care about a poxy Sapper? One thing the army will show you is how much better your "boring" civi job and life really is, all though your told from day one your only other option is McDonalds. Let the brainwashing begin. I honestly don't know why civis regard squaddies so high, the majority are the most useless c**ts i've ever met. Although you do learn to say yes sir no sir three bags full sir alot. Suppose employers like that.

 

Good luck in what ever choice you make, i for one can't wait to be a civi again and have my own freedom again.
