Does anybody use a pure greyhound as a lurcher,was

wondering how well they were on recall and other

skills that most lurchers are trained to as the norm?

I have one, retired now,she was a good enough dog,tackle anything, but she was murder for running on if she missed.

She never , ever quit but was'nt too bad for injuries, would'nt really have another, no real advantage i can see but a few disadvantages.

Around 20 years ago I had a greyhound bitch thst I got from a guy who used to race flapping dogs. I took this bitch with a view to breeding a litter of 3/4 bred collie greyhound puppies with my Richard Jones half bred. I decided that - more out of interest than anything else - too see if the bitch would 'switch codes' and take an interest in anything furry. She picked up a few rabbits and was passable on hares (lack of stamina) but she was a total nailer with foxes once taking 3 within an hour on the same night. However, she also killed a terrier, chased sheep and cattle and thought ferrets were for eating. Couldn't do anything with her if it moved she chased it. And to make things worse I had her for nearly three years and she never came into season.

had a few that could catch quarry but they werent lurchers by any standards

but did a job good fox/deer

Get one young enough and if you want a dog that will give his all and you don't want wipe the rabbit population out but want fun which is what it's mostly about other than food for freezer then you won't get a better dog and every dog has the brains to do what we require so don't listen to the argument that thru are thick as a human is thick without the right education/upbringing thats from experience

This question comes up time and time again...and the simple answer is NO ! A pure Greyhound, especialy a track reject, will NEVER be as good as a Lurcher ! Of course we need them to PRODUCE Lurchers, but I've seen too many Greyhounds get seriously hurt, even killed, when being run as a "Lurcher"; better to use them in a breeding programs to produce good Lurchers !

i useone just for rabbit and pr band hairs good i can go out for a night with him and he will be good to go agand next day recall is good but he likes to play with his kill most of the time lol

I have never reared one from a pup never seen the point [bANNED TEXT] the same time and effort can be put into a well bred lurcher pup however years ago i had a small bitch [24half tts] that came of a coursing farmer that could catch the odd hare and had good feild sence but couldent be trusted around small terrier types but was as good as gold around my springers.A good read about greyhounds and some good old photos in it is the legend of mick the miller by Michael Tanner.

A friend of mine has a wee bitch, 24'', ex track, he got her at 2, she is a great one, but he put a lot of work into her.

I have not seen her on a hare, but she sounds good for a greyhound, boxing in ect.

love greyhounds but not a patch on a lurcher too many injuries,also love to rag rabbits to bits,i like a dog to retrieve to hand and not come back with a minced up rabbit,hey also dont stop barbed wire the love it,wouldnt recomend one unless you have plenty of open land.

yes mate the dog wasnt too bad the bitch broke its neck ran into a tree chasing a hare.
