chilly 59
Hi , when I got my pup the breeder told me she would likely get the shits , and don't be supprised if there is a streek of blood as it's not unusual . Well she has had the shits and it has been streeked with blood, I told the vet about it when I took her for her first jab , but the vet didn't seem to woorried about it just said keep an eye on it . Well seems to be getting worse, and mucusie some times 2, She is due to go back to the vet tuesday for her second jab , but I'm going to take her Monday to get her checked and see what the vet thinks about her still having blood in her stool. Just wondering if any one has any views or ideas what could be causing this , and weather or not I should be so worried about it ?

Or could be something as simple not being used to the diet yet. If there is something seriously wrong, you not knowing could make it worse. Make sure you get to the vets on Monday when you can. Good luck. Edited April 9, 2011 by Tomm Parr

skycat 6,173
Pups should be sent off to their new homes with a couple of days worth of the food they are used to. It is NOT usual for a puppy to have blood in their shits, either when at the breeders or when they go to their new home. If that breeder considers this usual there is something wrong with the way they are rearing the pups. Yes, pups can be a bit loose due to stress when they go to their new homes, but it shouldn't be bloody. That smacks of a gastric infection/bug, even a very heavy worm burden, but it shouldn't be considered 'usual'.
chilly 59
I wormed her with her first jab, and was told she was wormed to date when I got her , is it still possible she could have worms ? , I did have some food with her not a greate amount and it was adult complete dry food, have changed her over to a complete puppy food now, like I said she is vary happy and seems healthy and eats well , but it has been concerning me the blood, her last stool now seemed better and more solid , but it has been like this for a week or so now some seem better then some are runny with the blood , if it is an infection then it should be easily treated yea ? steve123 29
gastro enteritis, possibly , usually down to weaning too early or incorrectly, as i dont know the full story its only a guess, you have to break the cycle , the runs strip the mucus from the lining of the guts and bowel then this leads to bleeding . could be an infection also ,the vet will be able to check a stool sample and may need antibiotics but these can also destroy the good bacteria in the gut and exacerbate the problem. if any of my pups have had this i starve them for a day and in the evening give a hard boiled egg with a couple of tablesppons of live yoghurt mashed together. the next day a small amount of boiled chicken breast with the yoghurt again. usually this will clear it up. check what i have said with your vet first as this is just my opinion.it is a problem and will not be doing the pup any good ,it is not normal good luck

Will get her to the vet tomorrow now, will give her some probiotick yogurt tonight tho can't do any harm and may help like suggested Will let you now what the vet says tomorrow ,

skycat 6,173
Sad to say that's no surprise then. Farming puppies in large numbers is stressful for dogs and pups, and let's face it: he's hardly going to feed them top notch food is he. Got a pup from there once, heaviest worm burden ever seen in a pup. He said it might have got missed out when worming the litter! FFS! It was only a third the size of the others in the same litter. Sadly the damage was too great: never could get its guts right and was PTS at nearly a year old due to reoccurring colitis plus it went down with every bug going. Follow Steve's advice and when you go back to complete puppy food, if that is what you want to do, then make sure to soak the food first. Feeding dry to tiny pups is risky any time, not natural to eat dry biscuit IMO, and even more risky if the pup has had gut problems. Worm with Drontal Plus and don't mess about with over the counter wormers.
darbo 4,774
thelast dog i got from hancock was in 1989 he had the same problems. i think he had been fed on vitalin while at hancocks. the good news after a trip to the vets he soon recovered and lived till he was 17. all the best of luck with your pup tomorrow.
