tommarshall 4
Alright Chaps. What is thought of as a good "all rounder" ? What should the dog be "tts to be considered a good all rounder ? Also what relevance does the height to the shoulder have on the speed of the dog, both take off and top speed ? I.e. does taller generally mean faster ? Thanks, Tom. Quote Link to post

Thanks, Tom. its a hard one mate, its peoples preference usually, i have a deer hound bull x grey he is 29 to the shoulder and i will class him as a all rounder for me, he is extremely game, and catches a fair few bunnies through the season, its down to preference mate. 1 Quote Link to post
TAXI DRIVER 549
Pre ban a good all rounder would take rabbits, hare and fox for fun. There`s still a few old stuff about. My ideal allrounder would be 25"/26",long in the back that can cover a lot of ground quickly. 2 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
An alll rounder is an elusive beast that exists in different mens minds as different things. There are so many spanners that could be thrown in the works. Landscape and terrain plays a massive part. Height ultimately is needed to consistantly pull down bigger quarry, but not as much as many think, a big heart can make up for not so big legs. The x or breeding is infinate in its possibility also. As for height and speed, speed at different times is what its about, i.e a a bigger dog may run faster over 50 or 100 yards, but not over 20 yards. And again different terrain and land also has a big effect. 5 Quote Link to post

rocky1 942
1 mans defenition of allrounder varys from 1 thing 2 another aswell as breeds on 1 hand 1 bloke wants their dog 2 do birds and with the gun and on the another 1 bloke dos,ent but they both class their dogs allrounder because they all take r/h/f/d and jump / takecomands /and good fieldcraft ,but people have different standards of dogs they keep so your allrounder is allways going 2 be different 2 the next guy, hope yous got that Edited April 9, 2011 by rocky1 Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766
My best one's for edible quarry have been lurcher to lurcher types. Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,164
To me an allrounder is a dog that can do most aspects of hunting. If you get invited coursing, or a days ferreting, of a night on the lamp, you should be able to take the same dog. It's probably impossible to find one that excels at everything but most good dogs should have a go at most things. I personally like saluki types, as most dogs can learn to ferret and lamp but I believe stamina is in the genes regardless of how well you train it. 1 Quote Link to post
snoopdog 1,256
ive got a saluki lurcher x lurcher ... 5 seasons under his belt and hes been what i call a proper honest dog ...hes ran up and down the country on allsorts and never let me down on the lamp or daytime ..ive let him down a time or too ,,,running him to hard ,,,,but his heart is massive...for what i have run him on alot of dogs would of thrown the towel in.....hes had some real stick running on ground and i will quote what a mate said ..he wouldnt run a cat on it .. never been a fan of ferreting so for that reason he aint to good ....his feet arnt the best no more...but he still fills the freezer when hes asked to ..great with other dogs people kids...what i call an allrounder ..thers a few lads who have been out with this dog and nobody has had a bad word to say about him ever... hes had 4 out of 5 on the fen in december but he will never make a fen dog ..hes been blown to bits down there too....but hes never looked like jacking ....took good numbers on the lamp ..night after night ....plus other quarry..the first time he took any quarry he took it like he had been doing it a an age ,,,,he would work of the slip hunting up what ever there was about fur or feather,,,,big and small..... this pic was took last year ...
