First Cross Collie x Greyhound

Recommended Posts

Hi,as you have one of his dogs and are happy with it,can you say whether his kennels are as bad as some people have said on this site, and if they are wouldn't it be better to stop buying from him for the good of the dogs...........if he was out of business then a decent breeder could take over as there is certainly a market for the crosses.

The Kennels are not as bad as everyone says, they are secure and dry. on both visits to his place all the dogs and pups were outgoing and friendly. Admitidly the areas around the yards are scrap yards  not the best of images but he wasnt trying to sell us cars! He is always happy to show you around and give you time, Pups were on clean dry bedding. Interesting thing was on our first visit I was trying to twist husbands arm to pick up a second pup at the same time, If he had been an unscrupleless dealer he would have happily taken us for double the money, instead he put me straight and advised that to get the best out of each pup it was better to have one at a time, 18 months later went back and got a second pup. Both are wonderful, never know, give it another 2 years and if we can I want to go back. Love and loved by anyone who meets them but also wonderful working dogs. I would never condone anywhere that didnt look after their animals, all of his looked great and happy. Also cheaper than most pups advertised down in cornwall as hancock crosses!

Good post and I see where you are comming from. I think timing is everything. Never even considered line breeding

Don't get me wrong minion, my first cross bitch is from the same place as your lurcher.. ;)

wow! smallmouth that is a great looking beast. did she work all quarry pre-ban?

The photo flatters her, she's actually quite small, (23ins).

As for "all quarry", well she's steady to deer, I broke her to them in the same way as I did sheep.

Foxes she seems to hate, hackles and tail raised. But I reckon it's also fear, as she did run one or two, (pre-ban) and I think if she'd really wanted to, she'd've connected.....

Hares, she had one of each, (a blue and a brown), pre-ban,

but at 23ins and 55lbs, she's really not a hare dog.

She's very keen on retrieving birds.

Roadkill Coot

Shot pigeon

........but when it comes to what I really got her for, rabbits, then the truth is she hasn't seen much work for a variety of reasons, mainly down to where/how I live. And so most of her rabbit catches are myxi's.

....and miscellaneous..

Deep frozen shoveller, (probably hit the power lines)

Smallmouth, surely you have heard the saying ' Size isnt everything'

:hmm: Yes, I think it was fellman that said it to me at Astley Show last year.......

I like small lurchers. What I meant was she looks bigger/racier in the photo than she really is, hence Rocks' comment about all quarry.....

Thank you, she does look well in the pics, but the truth is her temperament is nervy and difficult, particularly with other dogs, also her front feet are shocking.

She's constantly knocking the inside/outside toes up on both left and right feet and though she's not yet 4 year old, is permanently on 500mg of glucosamine/chrondotin per day.

I've seen a number of her close relatives with temperament problems, and one or two with bad front feet. Luck of the draw perhaps?

Now I think that's a cracking looking dog mate. And to be fair, it's a fantastic advertisment to Hancock dogs.

There's just something about the collie lurcher, i can't explain it but i have always liked them.

As of yet our first cross hasnt had any problems with feet, I think like humans some dogs like mixing and some are just a bit more choosy. Our two had to be social from an early age, trained them in the pub :drink: Met plenty and only dont like a few. :icon_redface: Think like you say Smallmouth it can be luck of the draw. The oldest is the same size as yours with the 5/8 3/8 being a couple of inches taller. What they lack in size they certainly make up for in muscle.

Guest ceredigion bull cross

Hi bud,

I actually have a Hancock dog and am more than happy with her. I would also go back to him but I just wondered what all the people who don't like Hancock expect people to do.

Just playing devils advocate, and not trying to upset anybody.....by the way I don't know anything about Hancock apart from what I have read in 'My life with lurchers'

Hi,

Fom memory the kennels themselves seemed okay, but it was the scrap yard that seemed really messy. The dogs seemed to be on good condition and they seemed to be kept dry.

I may have been there on the day that he tidyed up? but I wouldn't say they were that bad. More like they are messy. I had convinced myself that they were bad because of what people say, but when I actually think about it they weren't as bad as everyone makes out.

hi, i was at Hancocks kennels last month collecting my first cross blue merle....my personal oppinion of his kennels is that they are reasonably clean..also the day i was there was a friday which i was told was mucking out day......so all in all i have seen dirty kennels in some peoples back yards but not at Hancocks. :victory:

A few pictures of my old Hancock bred Beardie/border first cross sired by Zebedee

Great temperament and a good genuine dog on the lamp I`ve seen better but I have also seen worse he was a big lad but was agile and would take rabbits well and had a few foxes although not what I would term a "fox dog" but maybe if I had shown more interest in running him at foxes he would of been a better dog

about 14 weeks

about 9 months

about 2 & a 1/2
