Thinking of getting a terrier pup to add to my team, currently got a 2 yr old Jack Russell bitch, ok bushing dog and excellent ratter, very keen on killing things, though she's not that hard (not too keen on working cover etc.) took us about a year for her to even look in a rabbit hole, we got her at 6 months and to be fair she hadn't had the best start in life and was very nervy, she's now building her confidence and is getting better but could really do with something a bit harder to show her the ropes and also give her a hand really as now thinking of moving on to bigger things ;) what are your opinions on this, and what dog would you reccomend, I'm thinking of a Patterdale/Fell terrier?

Stick to a plummer. The breed is as good as useless anyway and leave the blacks to the proper terrier lads

get a wanker that didnt make the grade for real work instead of a well breed digging dog. Better still get a spaniel or somethng meant for diving through cover

Plummers have beagle blood

You,re better of getting a decent jrt or some other breed of terrier from a somebody that works their dogs in the way you want. Getting a black un is a different ball game, I'm not saying they can't be learnt to be a allrounder . But I got my first black un a few years ago and he ignores rabbit holes completly and will kill a ferret, but will go to ground on a fox

Thanks for that marshman, I never actually realised they were so different as terriers, glad I've been told will think of something else, makes it half the battle I suppose getting something that's actually bred for the job!

I think the only reason I was put off by getting another JRT is that there are so many variations, we dropped on with ours, but she's a stocky well proportioned one, there's possibly some bull in her somewhere down the line as shes got a square chunky head and very well muscled though we're not 100% sure on her breeding, I'll post a pic up as soon as poss but only have internet at work at the mo, I'm really not keen on the long bodied stumpy legged things that seem common today, everybody thinks she's not a JRT when they see her because they're used to seeing the short bent legged ones and struggle to find anything other than these. I think I'd be better off asking around at shows maybe??

It depends on what you,re looking for .ie what they look like or what they graft like. If you go to the shows I'm sure you'll get a looker. My best advice is to go out with someone what grafts their dogs where you can maybe see the parents work. The best allrounder I've seen was a low slung bent legged jrt. Jmo!

Blitz was my first real terrier i had a manchester type years ago but not really a terrier to me anyways. She will probably be the f*****g last lol shes mental shes turned my house and world upside down but in saying that i cant imagine life without her now  Shes great with kids and people just got the attitude of a cocky lion thinks she can take anything on but shes such a sweet old bat on the other hand.So if i was going to go through it all ever again id go for another patterdale but i would take a pup cos they are stubborn little feckers

every body has a differnt opinion but my self i do not have over hard terriers i prefer them a mixer and baying type that can be dug to over and over but each to ther own if your doing all round bushing ground work ect may be a well bred russel type from baying stock

not being funny but this was an honest post. I dont see why people feel the need to give advice to someone to get a 'useless' as you put it dog. As I don't personally hunt foxes with terriers this doesn't mean that I want a lapdog. I asked for advice on what was a good bushing TERRIER not spaniel as I want to do a bit of ratting and also rabbiting with the terrier as I do with my current one. And as for 'Proper terrier lads' it doesnt make you proper just because you hunt foxes CURRENTLY but if you read my original post it said i wanted to move onto bigger stuff but my terrier was a late starter, just dont currently feel my dogs are hard enough and they mean too much to me for me to set them onto something thats going to f*ck them up. Sorry but some people on here p*ss me off. I already said I wanted a hard terrier not a show dog. I dont show my dog but still want something thats not ugly in my eyes! - each to their own

My main focus is day work with my dogs bushing terriers getting the squatters up for my lurcher but also do alot of ratting

what do you mean when you constantly say you need a HARD terrier???

you should get a useless terrier...one thats useless for digging just so you aint having it go to ground on proper game when your out faffing with bunnies (which aint real terrier work) :whistling:

I know that isnt real terrier work, but the thing is I work my terriers with my lurcher through the day - hence needing a bushing dog, basically I want a good allrounder if there is such a thing! Mines good but just a bit soft in that she's not great at working cover.. I see what you mean about getting one that won't go to ground though as it would be a pain
