lurcherterrierferret 2
Mines coming up to 12 months soon and he just seems really daft compared to others I've seen, he's also very protective and shows signs of agression towards other dogs, particularly dogs rather than bitches which I find unusual as I've never seen this temperament in a lurcher before. He's starting to calm down when he works but is very, very head strong, it all seemed to be going well with the training now he takes the p*ss a bit sometimes, is it just more time he needs? I'm thinking is he just getting cocky now that he's had a few rats and rabbits? Has anyone else experienced this, he's my first lurcher though I've never seen this side of them before, all the others look so calm lol. he's collie grey x bedlington whippet Quote Link to post

Has anyone else experienced this, he's my first lurcher though I've never seen this side of them before, all the others look so calm lol. he's collie grey x bedlington whippet Mine's 9 months and can be a bit of a handful. She isn't aggressive towards other dogs, quite the opposite in fact, she get so over excited and properly bounds all over them, and does the same with people. It's my fault cos I generally take her for walks in the middle of nowhere rather than busy parks etc. She's proper obedient when there's no one around, and if there's a dog or person fairly nearby she won't go to them if I tell her not to, but if they are close (within 10m or so) she's off. She's starting to show signs of calming down a bit now though thank god. A couple of weeks ago though, a bloke was throwing a ball for his collie and I managed to keep mine to heel all the way up to them until the last minute when she went charging after the collies ball and sent herself, the ball and the collie bowling over into the nearby river, oops!!!! The owner wasn't too impressed....some people don't have a sense of humour do they! PS. This is my first lurcher aswell, I'm assuming they'll calm down when they mature cos all the others I've seen have been nice and calm aswell! Quote Link to post

Thanks for reply, yeah he's just started to walk to heel, in fact walks better off the lead than he does on it as he pulls, especially when working though I don't mind that too much, nice to know he's keen. He is very similar if he sees someone throwing a ball, tennis ball, football he's not bothered he'll chase it, much to the upset of the kids playing! You're right about some people not having a sense of humour though I have had quite the opposite when a womans chihauuha ran off to my dog and she told me to let him bite it because it would teach her not to run off!! really hoping he calms down soon, the main thing I want him to stop is the aggressiveness, can't understand it at all he's fine with some dogs but would savage another! he was well socialised as a pup with my parents dogs at first and then did my best for him to meet other dogs out and about, he's fine with our terrier though she is definitely the boss! Paid 935
I agree, after 2 years they tend to mature. Quote Link to post

I used to have a spaniel that was fine with other dogs until he got attacked by an alsation once and then after that if ever he saw an alsation he'd get aggressive. Probably a combination of fear and trying to get the first bite in before he got attacked again. It happened when he was about 2 and he was always nasty with alsations until he passed away at 16! Yeah, he lets me pick up the kill, though isn't retreiving to hand yet but I think that's partly because everytime he catches my terrier tries to pinch it so he spends more time avoiding her he shows no agression towards people at all unless he's guarding the car/garden and someone put's their fingers in when told not to as has happened! The only thing I can think is my dads border collie bullied him from being a pup always taking his toys, growling etc. but never actually attacked him. Maybe this has scarred him so now he wants to be the boss, but does still cower to my dads dog. Quote Link to post

Really hope he calms down soon, though he is working well so I suppose I should be grateful for that, he's much better when working than when we're just exercising, suppose the collie in him makes him intelligent and gets bored easily he's got high prey drive but is constantly wanting to chase something, he often gets fed up of me ignoring him bringing sticks to throw and fetches me half a tree and growls at it when he can't carry it!! Has anyone else experienced this, he's my first lurcher though I've never seen this side of them before, all the others look so calm lol. he's collie grey x bedlington whippet Sounds a lot like my dog, at 12 months he was a handful but if your dog is the same you will find a gradual improvement over the next 12. It's been nothing dramatic, just finding he needs less and less commands as time goes on and now at 2 he's pretty much as I want him. As for the aggression, does he do it only on the lead? My dog growls at every dog he passes while on the lead but is not dog aggressive in any way, I think it's just that he feels threatened while leashed. I tend to leash him around other dogs simply because he can be very full on when playing about, and it's not fair on other people if he's roughing up their dogs, even if he means nothing by it and the other dog isn't too worried. If you are walking him with another dog I think you will struggle to get him to a good standard of training, I did the same thing for the first 6 months and found it impossible because they formed their own little pack and did as they wanted, it would take a much better trainer than I am to do it that way.
