so I've decided to go with a .22lr

Recommended Posts

Cheers for all the information and tips you guys have given me.

I've decided to start off with a .22lr for rabbit shooting, and then possibly in a few months I will also get a .223 for fox shooting.

in regards to .22lr's though... Which makes are decent? and also which scopes and sound moderators would you recommend?

my mate has a browning t bolt that he is willing to sell to me but without a scope or moderator. is that a decent .22lr? and what kind of range would I be looking at if I bought it.

cheers guys

Peter,

Thats a very wise thing you have decided to do in choosing a rimfire in .22 when applying for a firearms certificate.

Im not sure about you applying for a .223 in a just a few months after though.

Learn how to shoot with your rimfire and more importantly learn about when not to take a shot.

Always think to yourself 'what happens to the bullet if it misses its target?'

Its safe shooting that needs to be learnt, guns are easy to use, stick bullets in and pull trigger.

As for your questions about makes and distances, any .22 rimfire is going to be good for rabbits up to 70m, and once you know the trajectory (rainbow) of your gun, it may even be possible to shoot accurately out to 100m. Obviously the bullet of a .22 rimfire can travel much further than that, and even at 200m still has around 12ftlbs of energy/the same as an air rifle at point blank range.

Lots of people using the Brownings as its a good good, loads more people shooting CZ as they are very good straight out of the box and give extremely good value for money.

There is a wealth of information on the forums, and as always its alway quicker to use the 'search forums' tool than waiting for replies to the same questions asked time eternal ;)

There was a thread just a few weeks ago about the best rimfire gun for a new shooter, just search for it :)

Its all down to personal preference. If you go for a semi auto it will be louder than a bolt action. My .17 hmr Browning T bolts is vastly quiter than my .22Lr semi auto ruger 10/22 had this gun for over 17 years and not given any problems. Just choose wisely and goto a reputable gun dealer ask alot of questions. I have used the same dealer for over 20 years. The gun is only as good as the person using it. Don't get a to bigger scope as it will out range your gun. I have a nikko sterling gold crown 4-12x50 on the .22Lr. As for distance can hit a rabbit at around 150+ yards. As for fox you have to place your shot on longer range to have a clean kill. Just think before you shoot. Your bullet will go through the thing you shoot so always have a back ground and know what is in that back ground. Hope this gives you an insight

I would question the vaildity of some of these statements.

With a moderartor on both rifles a .17HMR is infinitely noisier than a .22LR. That doesn't matter whether it is bolt action or semi auto. The fact is that the speed of sound is broken with a .17HMR whereas it isn't with a subsonic .22LR round. If you are talking about using the likes of CCI Stingers in the .22LR then the difference is obviously negligible.

However, for rabbits, I believe a good set up with accurate sub sonic ammo will be good out to 100yds, if you are good enough. I am not, with headshots, so limit myself to 75 yds. If I am taking a body shot I will extend the range to 100yds maximum. You will need to know the amount of drop you get with the particular brand of ammo you use and this will only conme through practice. No-one I know will take a fox at over 60-70 yds with a .22LR and subsonics

I have had my CZ452 for 15 years and it is a great gun to learn fieldcraft, trajectory and gun sense with. As mentioned above, you do not need anything with more than 10 times magnification and a standard 3-9 x 50 has served me well. Do not mess about changing magnifications. Stick with one setting and learn your holdover/holdunder points.

Enjoy your shooting.

Cheers

I have a ruger 10 22 and my dad has a cz 452 and there is not much difference in these rifles and I would recommend either. Also sound is not major factor with either rifle if you get a good moderator. My preference would be the ruger 10 22 as you can customise it very easily and it is also very useful to have the 2nd shot available if needed.

The 10/22 is marginally noisier on the firing than a bolt action, simply because it's virtually impossible to stop the action cycling making a noise. Of course you'll make a similar amount of noise cycling the bolt on the bolt action, but this will be after the shot has landed.

With a bolt action, a decent mod and true subsonic rounds, the only noise at the rifle end will be the click of the firing pin striking the round. By far the biggest noise (it's surprisingly loud on a quiet night) is the bullet striking the target.

ruger 10 - 22 all the way box of fifty bullets 3 quid whear 17 hmr are much more expensive.

now as for the long summer days when u just want to plink the 22lr semi auto is the dogs u know what as it is fun fun fun in a 10-22,,

becaus it a few years u will get the erg to get more power but will not want to sell the 10-22 because u will love itwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gif

and well 17 hmr is a good we gun but u might want to up grade in a few years to 223 243 or 270

but if u have a 17hmr well it harder to shift well thats my view on it any way ,,

For an LR you can't ignore the CZ452, pretty much bombproof and low maintenance. I do like the look of the t-bolt but bear in mind it has weaver rails for the scope not dovetails so the mounts will cost a little more.

Moderator wise - SAK end of, yes there are other mods about that claim to be quieter but for the extra cost it's not worth it imo. My SAK moderated LR is quieter than my air-rifle and like Matt said, bullet on bunny is louder.

Scope wise you don't need anything uber. I've had various on mine but now have a fixed mag (6x) Lisenfeld and it will happily drop rabbits out past 100yards if I do my bit.
