Rats, & Bunnies for good measure.....

Recommended Posts

If you've read our last few posts then you might have read that me n wor kid have gained a little more permission.

Just a small stables with 20 or so acres and a big rat problem, but what we found was a little bunny action too.

We visited on Saturday afternoon for a proper recce and see what damage had been caused by the rat problem for what we were initially there for. Under the kennels it was like rat city..... However on inspecting the paddocks whilst doing a boundary check there was a bit of bunny damage too which could cause a horse to lame. We informed the owner who was only more than happy to allow us to see what we could get bunny wise should the chance arrive while we were out.

Below is a photo of the extent of the permission..... THe extent of the boundary is just past the fence to the rear of the pic and behind the big Sycamore to the left (which is a sitty tree for woodies ;) ;) ...)

we started off zeroing for the session ahead of which wor kid done a couple of videos ..... it took a little while as there was quite a breeze from right to left but we got there in the end

We started the hunting session at about 20:00hrs of which wor kid took the first session on the rats after baiting with a burst tin of Tuna and I went in the search for the elusive bunny!

As I made my way round the paddock scanning with the NV I came across 2 sitting side by side at 45-50m however the wind was going to be behind me as I made my way towards them and a shot that far in that wind would have been nigh on impossible to be made cleanly. I gingerly made my way towards them only gaining about 7-8m before one of them became alerted to my presence and stood bolt upright with its mate also becoming nervous. I froze for what was an estimated 20-25 seconds hoping the rabbit would relax but it just stayed there so I made an attempt to get a bit closer..... That was it....the one that was upright legged it quickly followed by it's mate. The oncoming wind made it hard for making a mark on the bunnies but there was still a fair bit of activity.

I managed to get round to the other side of the paddock where the wind was in my face and most of the bunny damage was situated and I lay up and waited. 15 minutes passed, I scanned the paddock again and I dont know if I'm exhaggerating but I could swear what I saw were the same 2 rabbits that had just legged it, both bounding back out into the paddock to feed in the same spot they ran from earlier..... I couldnt believe my luck, this time I was on the right side of the wind and both were in 25-30m range. I lined up the crosshair on the NV with the closest and gave it a mil over, I didnt even hear the crack as the FX 16gr hit home, I just watched at the bunny keeled over, its mate just sitting there motionless about a metre past not knowing what had happened. I quickly took aim on that one which had not sat upright and without thinking I squeezed the trigger, the bunny backflipping as the 16 grainer struck again. It doesnt happen like that very often but when it does it feels great!

I'd not heard from wor kid on the radio so I gave him the good news of "2 in the bag so far" and he replied with "4 in 20 mins"....I was starting to like this new permission!

I radioed wor kid it was time for a cuppa so headed back to the van of which I managed another bunny with a precision headshot taken at 35m

I got back to find wor kid had managed another so that made 5 rats and 3 bunnies so far.

After the cuppa we swapped over and I took my "shift" on the rats and wor kid on the bunnies....... after about an hour and half myself getting 3 more rats to add to the total and wor kid 2 bunnies

The bag for the night of which we took 8 rats, of which only 2 were obtainable and 5 bunnies with wor kid getting 5 rats and 2 bunnies myself getting 3 of each

Well done to you both lads, Your new permission looks lovely and so does the sport you're getting. I really enjoy the vids you lads both make and your shooting is really top notch quality.

Darryl, do you keep your HW100K here as a dedicated NV-scoped rifle?

Can't believe no-one has given you a SPA for such a nice write-up, so have one from me!

All the very best to you both Gary and Darryl.

Cheers for the replies again folks!!

Wurz the X3 is as awesome as anything you can expect from A&M although it's not in everyones taste due to the length but for me it's what the quarry doesn't hear as the video shows all you can hear is the whistle of the pellet by then it's too late!!

Myself or Davy may have some lying about if anyone wants one just drop us a pm for details

it certainly sounds very quiet, and the length doesnt seem to unbalance the rifle at all? how much is one matey?

i'm only asking out of interest as it'll be out of my price range for a while though, that stutzen's gonna take me to the cleaners for some time i fear, good job all i'll need is pellets once it finally arrives...

cheers, wurz

Very nice write up and a cracking bit of working land to shoot over, good shooting lads,

I loved the bit about 'rabbits holes could make a horse lame' (yes I know this can happen)But I can just imagine you both laying that one on them like a good dollop of jam on bread, I bet they shat themselves at the thought of a horses foot in a hole :) love it :)

Wurz I was going to suggest me buying one of the new X3 and then selling my Twink MK2 cheap to you mate, then realised you allready have one :wallbash::D
