Dirty Moley!

Recommended Posts

Went down the permission yesterday, not a lot of action, think I heard some shotguns in the field behind me, either that or two bird scarers have got themselves in sync, rather than out of sync, seen a few casings around as well. Laid down in my rut, keeping out of the slight breeze (gusty wind about 20-40mph, really variable) I got bored waiting for bugs to appear so I stood up with a view to stalking, popped a nictotine stick in the mouth with a view to lighting it when I had the oddest sensation I was being watched.

Now the paddock field on my permission sometimes has haorses in it and the landowner would like all rabbits seen on that bit despatched if possible and no horses around! I saw a kit, must have been 3 to 4 months old, sat up looking at me! I had the hood down, cigarette in mouth and I felt like a right pillock, gun was on the floor, could I pick it up? Bent down slowly and picked up the Super Ten, cigarette unlit in corner of the mouth, I stood up, the damned thing was still watching me...

OK, so lift gun up slowly, there it sat watching. Now I am not the invisible man, nor do I own an invisigun, so how the hell I was not spooking this bunny is beyond me! I put the butt to my shoulder and raise the rifle, slowly. Picture it, 5 foot 8 inch pillock, dressed in DPM 90, face visible, raising rifle to take aim at bunny on the other side of the ditch, with cigarette in mouth. I got the gun to the firing position and took aim, it had what could only be described as a blank expression! I think it must have thought it had seen the world's largest novelty cigarette lighter and was waiting to see where the flame came out! I took careful aim, waited for wind to drop and fired! One dead kit.

Forgot camera but tried to paint as accurate a picture as possible in words.

Well decided to have a smoke before I moved so I did not drag the smell of smoke downwind round with me, lol. Thought it was better to smoke in one place before moving.

you painted the picture and thats what i saw :D ,its a different ball game hunting with an air-rifle discipline being a key factor to further your chance of getting results jmo of course at least you got lucky

I know, but sometimes if they are not on one bit of the permission they are very active on another, I have about 62-64 acres on this permission to cover, so plenty of opportunity for leg stretching! and stalking, only cover is round the edges though, but I do have the woods that adjoin it open to me now, so hopefully will get in there soon to go for woodies and rabbits.

I know, they make lamping impossible at the bottom of the woods bit and down the track, put the torch on and crash, Flight Seargent Buggles and Co take off with resounding crashes, and flaps. Bleeding nuisance they are. By the track they are in Leylandii which is impossible to shoot through and at the bottom of the woods they are back in the trees so they are mostly obscured by branches, cant see the silhouettes, but I wll be patient. The woods are good for rabbits, they are bringing the owners trees down by burrowing underneath, he is fed up with them!

"Now I am not the invisible man, nor do I own an invisigun, so how the hell I was not spooking this bunny is beyond me! "

That would be because it's a kit, you could kill some of them with a tennis racket.

Its better not to smoke at all . If smokers knew how badly and how much they smelt , they would give up . I can smell a smoker from 20 yds easily , rabbits can smell it from alot further ........
