Wood Pigeons

Recommended Posts

We've got a few fields of Oilseed Rape on our farm which are being absolutely hammered by wood pigeons at the moment. I found some time today to set up some decoys to try to lure the offending pigeons within range of my rifle. I used a classic horse shoe deocy pattern with the nearest decoy set up at about 20 yards from the hide. Within 5 minutes of setting up the first pigeon dropped into the pattern about 35 yards from my position. It was fairly breezy today, but I set myself up directly down wind of the deeks in order to minimise the cross wind. Half a mil-dot holdover for 35 yds, and the pigeon flopped over, flapping it's wings slightly but stone dead. I stayed in position for about an hour and as often happens when shooting over decoys there were quiet periods, and busier periods, but by the time I packed up I had 5 pigeons keeping me company. I was fairly pleased with the end result, but there are still probably 100 more eating our crop but they can wait until next weekend!
