Lamping, Stalking and a mooch with the airgun

Recommended Posts

I've had a busy few days and as we've agreed to post more genuine topics to help sort the forum out i thought i'd write it up.

Started thursday night out lamping with Blackstaff and his dogs, mine being out of action for various reasons. We did some new untouched fields, the rabbits were totally unphased by the lamp but went like rockets once on the move and took advantage of the rough pasture to unsight the dogs. The runs were fast and furious and the dogs were really having to work for their catches. We ended on seven, there were plenty more rabbits to go at but both dogs had taken knocks so we called it a night.

Worked on a mates house Friday and he took me stalking in the evening. A nice quiet stalk which culminated in dropping a fat fallow buck and twilight coffee cooked on a Kelly kettle watching deer in the deer park next door.

Today i took my 7 month pup Willow for an introductory lesson with the air rifle. She took to it like a duck to water. I kept her at heel off lead and after a few reminders she started to copy me when i crouched or stalked. We crept within range of rabbits several times and i made her wait without charging after them as she'd like to. Once she could do that we finally stalked with the intention of shooting and .... i bloody missed! Twice. After having a stern word with myself we tried again and i finally managed to do my part, she then ran in which i wanted to avoid, but then retrieved it back to me with a minimum of prancing but a bit more crunching than i'd like. More work to do there i think. Overall i was pleased with her, just need to make time to do it more often so it sinks in.

So that was the last couple of day. Ratting tomorrow!
