Rabbits are back

Recommended Posts

Not for long if you dont let them breed

When you get written permission,do you outline rabbit control!

But i will let bread?

I take kits, milky does,in return for the owner letting me shoot on the land.

Your not doing him any favours,by letting them bread!only your self!

I've killed my share of young rabbits with dogs and guns so I'm not saying someone else shouldn't do it but I think the whole idea that we do it all for pest control is a bit far fetched.

Soon,as has happened in past summers, this section will be flooded by shooters posting about killing baby rabbits.many will defend it by saying they are carrying out control to keep permission, save crops etc and they might be.BUT let's be honest come winter these same lads don't seem to be out as much which either means they killed there quarry early on or they prefer a nice summers evening on dumb critters rather than going after a more wary quarry on a cold winters day.I often wonder why such control needs to take place when the lads aren't getting much in the autumn/winter.

When I was into the rabbiting we never really stopped and i even remember posting on the lurcher section that it's for pest control on a thread about killing young bunnies at least four years ago.it wasn't though I just didn't want to stop hunting and those young rabbits were easier targets.i see a similar thread is on the lurcher section now, forums do repeat themselves don't they.

in response to the above post. i got a call last weekend about a farmer that needs some rabbits shooting. so i went up and got 5. some of them young rabbits. doing this has given me some much needed permission(240 acres) that is bouncing with the things. i will be up again this evening, doin my best to put hole in their numbers, but i dont really think i will be lacking come winter, unless the mixy returns. atb.

The main reason I don't mind taking summer rabbits is because mixy always came and wiped out far more than we did and because we were walking or driving a 4x4 around thousands of acres of fells we weren't going to wipe them all out.viruses and the bad weather caused havoc to the poulation over the last couple of seasons aswell.I think as long as people see summer hunting for what it is then it's ok.the first year I got an air rifle i went out that summer on the reedy edges of moorland and took good numbers on an evening.I thought I was pretty good untill I tried shooting the same land in the winter,a totally different game.

Before anyone points this out, yes I am new to shooting but personally I have no problem with the principle of taking as many rabbits as possible. They're an invasive, non native species and you're never going to get rid of them completely. If you manage to get rid of them on your permission then it will be easier to find more permission, I'm sure a reference from a happy land owner will go a long way to persuade other land owners that you're performing a genuinely useful service.

There is not an unlimited amount of land just waiting for a good shooter to come clear. If you work out the number of folk that wish to hunt rabbits or whatever in the many ways they do, divide the total huntable acreage of this country by that number, then you would probably get a shocking figure. There is not always more land, with more quarry just waiting for you. As a result, many folk want to do a good job, but also keep enough about to ensure they can come back to that land.

As for 'invasive, non native' - so are most of our quarry, and lets face it, we are VERY lucky that they have invaded here or we'd all be very bored.

Also PEST CONTROL - farmer has hundreds of bunnies around, doing real damage, and you honesty think he's going to recommend you as an effective method, if he REALLY wants them gone, waltzing round with an air gun, knocking over 1, 2 or 5 here and there is a drop in the ocean. Most of the time the farmer is doing YOU a favour by letting you shoot the land and kid yourself your a pest controller.

There is also just the fact that watching a kit stand and stare at me 10-20 yards away while i am in plain sight, do nothing to try to run or hide, and then just shooting it, makes me feel like a bit of a c**t (maybe i'm soft). I'd rather just wipe out, mum, dad, aunty, uncle, granny, grand da, and the whole family tree over winter, when their meat is good, their skins useful etc.

. . . .. . and then usually the farmer is happy that when spring comes and his crops start growing, they ARE NOT getting damaged, rather than calling me out (even if i'm willing) to try to combat the damage in spring / early summer. If i'm out doing a lot at that time of year, the farmers see it as me obviously failing my duties in the winter.

The land in question is where horses will be so any rabbits pose a danger to them , I shoot rabbits cause it saves mine and my OAP parents monthly meat bill , the reason for my happiness , and cause I like it , I shoot anything else that causes the land owner an issue to , on this one permission he wants the foxes on there left alone so they will be , if he asked me to shoot them I would do , permission is hard to get so I keep my land owners happy end of.
