mooster 1
Just reading a thread by Kurgan talking about making the most of your environment. I'm a great believer in that, after all it's what other predators do - adapting to their environment. Some of the land i ferret on is bordered by dual carriageway and i've noticed a lot of these verges and banks are inhabited by bunnies. I've taken quite a few bunnies in those areas when covered by copse at the roadside but am reluctant to ferret there in view of traffic as some nosey bugger is sure to stop and ask me who gave me permission. What i'm wondering is who do i ask?...is it someone in an office at the highways agency somewhere? Has anyone ferreted these areas or sought permission? Not very tranquill i know ,but sometimes good when you have not much time and can park up nearby. Anybody know? Cheers Mooster. Quote Link to post
john b 38
That's a really good question - my mate and I were talking about just that on our way back on Friday. He was telling me that when he was younger you would often see people out on the roadside banks on a Sunday morning. Quote Link to post

kurgan 5
Thinking about it do you know anyone that has been charged for ferreting the most ive had is a few dirty looks or bugger of by the police and that was a long time ago,if you do ferret by the road try wearing a dayglo vest most people will think you work for the council ,take plenty of breaks ,cup of tea in your hand may be put so traffic cones over the holes . The Ferret 0
if you do ferret by the road try wearing a dayglo vest most people will think you work for the council That's actually not a bad idea at all!!! Ferret Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
I think ye'll find it's the County Councils who govern most roadsides. Cellophane rat in hells chance there then But, as has been suggested above; Day Glo vest is an automatic sign of allowance. I have " PEST CONTROL " emblazoned across the back of mine. It's to save midunderstandings as I creep about, poking around into the furtherst reaches of other peoples properties. Makes me obvious. Obviously not trying to hide mysef and my activities. Wording explains the rest. Boiler suit underneath the Hi Vis would add even more authority to a roadside creeper. White safety helmet would put most people off ever daring to question ye. If in doubt; Carry a Clip Board. No one in their right mind would go up against a bloke armed with a white helmet and a Clip Board! Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
No one in their right mind would go up against a bloke armed with a white helmet and a Clip Board! You are one gas man. Frank. Quote Link to post
Guest craftycarper
local councils/authority, highways department/agency. Probably involves lots of red tape H&S, method statements and risk assesments, signage in the roads, cones and so on and so on...... Quote Link to post
mooster 1
Thanks gents, pretty much what i was already thinking...including the overalls and reflective. ........Think i'll draw the line at cones and a hard hat though!! Mooster Quote Link to post
stubby 175
ditches reply is quite correct quote; If in doubt; Carry a Clip Board. No one in their right mind would go up against a bloke armed with a white helmet and a Clip Board we do our pest control for london underground, no names on hi vi but wear the "all green" type work gear carry maybe a blue holdal of poisons etc, although we carry all sorts of different photo ID allowing us entry to the underground, its very rare that anyone approaches us, they even open the customer ticket doors as we walk towards them as we mutter "thanks mate" not even an "who do you work for" makes you think, carry a rucksack with the intention of blowing something up and they on you like a tonne of bricks, wear a hi vi an look official, they help and wave you on though I'd therefore go with the boiler suit and hi vi idea, dont lie to anyone, but youll look the part Quote Link to post
TOMO 27,578
love ditch shitters answer . hes dead right how many of us avoid people with clipboards , evry time i see one in town i walk across the othe side. well i have actualy gone down this road ( forgive the pun) and so far got knowere. highways agency do look after the roads but they give difrent areas to diffrent management companies to look after and maintain difrent sections. so its these that you need to contact which is what i have done, of course im not after permision exactly as im after paying for my sevices. any othe pesters done this work? Phil Lloyd 10,738
We do a fair bit of it... Its just part of the job.. 'Roadsiding' for local authorities is very profitable,.but its the pits for a keen ferreting enthusiast The obvious noise and constant disturbance takes some fecking getting used to,.and you have to be vigilant with regards to the ferrets wandering out across the road But on the whole it is a very good mistress...£££...
