niall_b73 41
The "true Enniskillener", who saw the first light of day in Townhall Street more years ago than he probably cares to remember, had cause to celebrate last week when he landed this magnificent 18 pound 9 ounce salmon from the River Drowes. It is the biggest fish of the season so far from the popular river and was caught on a Green Butt Cascade fly in the Crooked Hole, close to the Four Masters Bridge near Kinlough. Brendan made history back in 2006 when he became the first angler ever to catch the first salmon of the New Year - and put it back into the river! Brendan Burns with the 18lb 9 ounce salmon he caught on the River Drowes. Up until the introduction of a ban on the sale of rod-caught salmon, hoteliers and restaurateurs would have bid big money for the kudos of putting Ireland's first salmon of the season on their menu. The fish would have been knocked on the head the minute it was landed, paraded in front of the cameras, handed over to a chef and served up at a celebration dinner. However, faced with dwindling salmon numbers the Central Fisheries Board decided to encourage anglers to catch-and-release fish. It offered the angler landing the first salmon a prize to return it alive to the water. Shortly after dawn on New Year's Day 2006 Brendan caught the first fish of the season - and promptly let it go again. The gesture earned him a 500 euro tackle voucher and a 1,000 euro donation to his favourite charity, Trócaire. Having done his bit for conservation, Brendan, who is retired and living in Derry, decided this one was for the pot! another top catch..... niall_b73 Quote Link to post

Philip Maher reports from his River Suir Fishery: A nice 16 lbs. springer taken on fly on my Clonmel beat on Sunday. Still a lot of kelts in the river and great care should be taken when handling them. Hopefully the rain over the next few days will stir things up a bit. http://www.fishinginireland.info/update/salmon_angling.htm#suirsalmon niall_b73 Quote Link to post
