borderterrier 0
Ah yes, the Border Terrier and it’s working qualities. A much-discussed topic, you either love them or hate them. If you hate them, why? Chances are you or someone you know has bought a one (or you’ve read one of that Plummer persons books) and it has failed at every task. Where did the dog come from, or rather what did the dog come from. It always makes me laugh when you see a pup for sale “Excellent for show, pet or workâ€. Stay well clear would be my advice. Over the last 50 or so years the breed has become more and more popular for all the wrong reasons. To the point where pups are selling for £500+ in some cases and the Border Terrier club has become worried at the sharp rise in dogs being registered, up from 3500 in 1999 to 7500 in 2004. Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted springs to mind. If you’re spending that sort of money on a pup you’re not going to work it, but chances are you’ll show it and want to breed from it (4/5 pups x £500 = ££££££££) Unfortunately it will only be bred to the latest rosette winning “super dog†and produce more non-workers, and the cycle stars over again. If you get a good one they are a pleasure to own. The dog I’ve got has a fantastic nose on him, far better than any other dog I’ve had, but is brave to the point of being reckless. He wants to sink his teeth into everything that moves. Although he gets on with the dogs at home, he detests other dogs, large or small.(can be a bit of a nuisance at times) IMO bitches are the better of the sexes. They are usually a handier size, seem to mature quicker than dogs, and are nearly always more determent. There is a lot of rosette chasing rubbish out there, and people in it only for the money , avoid like the plague. Get a good ‘un and enjoy the sport Quote Link to post
