has anyone got any tips on cleaning my 12 bore shotgun , as i have just bought a cleaning kit from my local gun dealer.

thanks

matt

I'm relatively new myself (2 years) but what i do is spray some cleaning solution that came with my cleaning kit forget its name, hoppes #9 i think onto the front of my boresnake and drag it though each barrel twice, then i lightly clean / oil the outside metal with gun oil.

thats just if i've been shooting though if its been a while i strip the whole thing and clean each individual part.

the parts within the kit are pretty self explanatory to be honest but one thing i will say,do not leave excess oil on the metal working parts, if the gun is stored upright the oil will leak onto the stock from the breech and over time the wood may swell and start to split as you will see on many second hand guns for sale

Reading this warning about keeping guns upright has got me thinking I need to make a wall-mounted gun cabinet with horizontal racks.

I think once you've cleaned the barrel with the patches and bore cleaner you run the copper wire thing up and down each barrel something stupid like 200 times (turning it each time so it doesn't leave scores) then put a drop of oil on the soft thing and run a light coat down the barrel.

That's how I do mine, I probably do it totally wrong though!

Here's a few vids I did a while back on the subject :

it covers pretty much everything on cleaning a bouble barrel shotgun, though I may post a n update because I've since found some impreovements which shorten the cleaning time.

as for the oil issue, just use a lightly oiled rag, same for the bores, a lambs wool mop lightly oiled, but not so it runs, it's not hard to get right so why do so many people get it wrong?

its not just the barrels you want to clean...if you shoot an ejector shot gun dont forget the moving parts like the extractors they can gum up after a while and stop ejecting the spent cases... on most you can push the ejector in slightly and pull out the ejector pin and then you can get the spring and ejector bar out clean and lightly oil then refit...and you can take the stock of by undueing the rear bolt then you can get at the side plates if your shotgun has them or you can undue the machine screw and drop the trigger and firering mech out of the bottom of the action... give it a scrub with a good cleaner dry re lube (LIGHTLY)reasemble and use i dont use oil on my barrels of any of the guns i have i use and have done for many years a silicon cloth...and yes DO NOT OVER OIL YOUR GUN AND LEAVE IT STOOD UP THE OIL WILL GET INTO THE STOCK AND WILL CRACK IT.

Hi Matt

I shoot quite a lot of clays and the way to get my barrels spotless is by putting my cleaning rod and a bronze brush in the chuck of my electric drill and on a slow speed

for a few minutes then cleaning with kitchen towels until they come through clean then thin film oil with mop.

Use a good gun grease on the knuckles of the action and foreend and any other moving parts, I have been doing this for the last 45 years without any problems.
