Bitch had a fit

Recommended Posts

Went out for a stroll with my mate and the dogs today, when on th way back through some woods noticed my old bitch wasnt with us, we walked back about 100yrds and i seen her flapping about in a bush to start with i thought she had ran into a snare but as i got closer i could see she was having a fit, foam coming from her mouth legs kicking body flapping i was gutted i thought she was a goner there and then i kneeled down beside her just so she knew i was there "not sure if she noticed at all" about a couple of minutes later she stopped kicking and flapping and tried to stand but her brain wasnt conncted to her legs she kept pushing herself up onto her back legs and falling backwards another few minutes past and she found her feet a bit unsteady but she was up she rested her nose against my knee and just stood i gave her another good 5-10 mins and she looked her usual self again, anyway i got her home into the car straight to the vets, he took her weight, tempreture, listened to her heart but couldnt explain it he says it might just have been a one off then again it could happen tomorrow again, so i will have to wait and see and hope this doesnt happen again, dont think i could face watching her going throught that again. have any of you guys had a dog that has had a fit with no explanation that has carried on with no more problems? or anybody any idea what might have caused it?

I have a dog with Epilepsy, she has a mild fit lasting 3-5 minutes about every 2-3 months.

She does exactly what you describe with your dog.

I opted not to give her medication as the side effects will do her more harm than the fits. She is perfectly normal and happy at all other times so we agreed to let her live her life for as long as she is happy, if her fits get worse/more frequent and for prolonged periods we will have her PTS as it's not fair to watch a dog suffer. My dog is nearly 3 and had her first fit around 14 months old. She is just a pet :(

my bitch is 7yrs old and this is the first time she has fitted, she has never had any other problems. i told the vet she was a working dog and he suggested retiring her incase while chasing she has a fit while running towards a fence or a wall or even out of sight where no one knows where she is and cant get to her. my had is pickled wondering what to do for the best, i know she aint going to be happy when she sees the ferrets getting boxed up and her kennel mates getting taken out, but i also know its for her own safety.

It's sad but i think it wise to retire her (if fits continue) as strenuos activity & excitement is linked to fits.

You could always semi-retire her, keep her active but give her the summer off (as most folks do) and if there's no signs of a fit by next season give her a go, you might be lucky and it could just be a one-off  I hope so for you and the dog.

It seems to affect the owner more than the dog, an hour after a fit and you'd never suspect what happened to mine, perfectly normal and acting like the loon she is.

I just talk to mine & hold her in my arms til she comes round (she's only little).

Try not to fret over it and hopefully it wont happen again or be so infrequent so as not to be a problem to her and she'll still enjoy a long and happy life, atb

cheers shazza, your right think it was just the shock of seeing her the way she was "I THOUGHT SHE WAS SENT FOR" but looking at her now you would never know it had happened, im just worried it happens again and ends up with a different outcome.

They usually need a decent snack after most dogs are ravenous that ive seen fit in the past vet recommended a few biccies or treats after to up their sugar levels a little potassium can help too but you need to give her only a little every day maybe a little banana if she will eat it or theres other sources if she wont. The onky real treatment nowaydays unless they fit a lot is diazepma tubes to stick up their ass to stop the fit

Just a thought, I read an article in a paper months ago about a collie that had the same problem, vets said epilepsy but the woman wasn't happy with the diagnosis. She researched and had info off some guy in America to feed the dog on raw meat and veg, no crappy biscuit. It worked for her. The shit that goes into biscuit is shocking, worth a go.

I had a lurcher with epilepsy, it started at around 18 months and she lived until 12 years.

I had to give her medication because it became a weekly thing. She knew when it was going to happen and would come looking for one of us, so we would sit on a chair with one knee wedged under her stomach to support her.

The medication took the edge off her I think so she became a pet.

Fingers crossed mate that your hasn't got epilepsy and It's just a one off.
