insulation tape may help the blood from going everywhere but the wound needs air to heal, A small piece of plastic piping should do the trick, and tape it on over the wound, you should also

get wound powder from your local agri merchant which will aid in clotting and healing...

bath in salt water at least twice a day to speed up the healing process, and keep the wound clean,

Snap.

Snap, do you think bathing is better than just leaving it dry to scab over (providing it is already clean) I've found leaving it to scab seems to heal quicker than to keep cleaning. I know human nursing is under the same impression that over cleaning slows the healing process?

That's exactly why the last 1/3 to 1/2 of a working dogs tail should be docked. I've seen it in the cattails where it looked like someone had walked along with a can of red spray paint in each hand. Followed the blood trail to find a worried owner trying to wrap his shirt around the dog's tail. I cleaned it, put Styptic powder, gauze, vet wrap and Duct tape on it for him. Silly for being afield so unprepared, but it seemed like he had never even considered the possibility before. Guess we all get caught with our pants down the first time.

You can try as many different dressings as you like but if the dog wants them off then it will, possibly even damaging it more in the process. I had to get the end took off my dogs tail in the end and he was a fecker for opening the wound up and removing the dressings and stitches afterwards. The vet wanted to take nearly all his tail off which I said no to, it would have healed a lot quicker if he had done but I think I made the right decision in the end after it eventually healed.

is the tail damage happening in the kennel? if yes i suspect your kennel is not wide enough, a cardboard tiolet roll inner gaffer taped on, leaving the end open works, also dip the split end in potassium permanganate crystals to clot the bleed should heel in a couple of weeks.
