A few hours out with Simon...

Recommended Posts

Hi, folks.

Right then, I don't really believe in luck but this is takeing the p*ss now......

After my Luger scope took in water, my duff batch of Dynamics, the broken cocking arm on my 52, this time out my Walther scope on top of my 90 went tech.....!!!!! :wallbash: I've had more broken and failed kit in the past couple of months than I've had in the last THIRTY YEARS!!!!!

We set up at our normal zero check and all was going well to begin with, Simon had his .22 HW77 with a Hawke something or other that had a very (for me :icon_redface: ) confuseing reticle and I had my .20 HW90 with the now fecked Walther 4-12x50. We set the target board out at around 30 yards and set the scopes up just fine  We then set out some 50 plus yard targets and had a play, all was well to begin with but then my shots started to wander.... I checked back on the zeroing board and my shots were flying all over the place  tried to adjust but something was wrong, the adjusters wern't working and my shots were totally random........ FFS!!!!!! :wallbash:

Luckily, I'd also fetched along my King Ratty for a play (5 pence groups on the zero board  ) so I took the Simmons 8 Point 1.5-5x32 off that and set it up on my 90. BINGO!! Grouping very well with the Baracudas and back on track  What a lovely little scope, dead basic but very good quality.

After all was doing what it was ment to, we set off for another part of Simon's shoot to a field of kale that was being hammered by rabbits.

I went off for a stalk along the edge of the fields along the boarder of some woods. I saw quite a few bunnies but none presented a shot, they are very easily spooked.... A squirrel wasn't so lucky though

Simon had more luck on the bunnies though

Once again, I've got some pics and once again I can't get them on here so if some kind soul would post them for me, I'll email them to you...

Thanks for reading

Cheers.

nice permission looks vast  right gutter about all the kit failure s though hopefully when you get them sorted that will be that for a good few years.

It is a cracking spot, Fry but the bunnies are so very easily spooked. Most places I've shot before, when you're creeping quietly and steadily along, they'll drop in to cover then come out again ten or fiveteen mins later. Not here, they go to cover and stay there. There's quite a few Buzzards and hawks about and also owls so I guess they're very wary.....

It's just a case of sh*t happens with my kit  I've honestly never had anything like the bad luck I've had this past few weeks ever.... Gear I thought I could rely on going wrong. I'll stick my JSR back on the 90, I have faith in that  The Simmons I was useing today is a cracking little scope but just a little more mag would suite me better.

Cheers

Thanks for getting write up started Andy and Moley for help with the pics.

This is a lovely part of my permission, about 3/4 of a mile on from where we've photographed our zeroing and target sessions and you are right Fry mate it is vast. This is just one more field among many more yet. And so far, after a run of nothing happening at the further end, and a spate of very bad luck for Andy's kit, it has to be said, there was quite a lot of Rabbit activity out last night at this part of my permission.

Thank God as I was beginning to wander what the hell was going on, with so little or nothing seen before. This is usually given to barley and dawn and just before dusk is a magic time for shooting here when the crop is ripe at mid summer. I've had some of the best shooting ever here then.

Well away from the main road, and passing lampers sniping from vehicles, The Kale crop now is getting hammered by rabbits. They were very active at the dusk where my final tally ran to a bag of four.

Top pic No.1 is me at my first sniping spot after we split up. I got the first rabbit from there at the very far left of the pic, where the corner is. 35-odd metres range by the reticle-zero of my scope. I asked Andy to take the lower end of the field as there is always great numbers of rabbits active there, and, it would do him good to get a bag for his hard luck recently here.

Pics Nos. 2, 3, and 4. The lie of this part of the shoot and Andy's squirrel with his rifle.

Si (zini), when you can get over next, this is one area where I'll take you out along here. Same when you can Davy

Over the fence there is a meadow. And that's where I nipped over to give Andy more of a chance on his own. The rabbits have always been very wary on my shoot. so, an early arrival and comfy set-up is essentially important. I got down to rest on a nice little hillock of soft grass and within 20 minutes shot rabbit No.2. at about 33 metres. Alas a bolter into a thorn thicket. My carefully set-up headshot turned into a bodyshot on his flank, just behind the shoulder and I lost him, but I heard him squeal and die. I Bloody hate it but that's how it goes sometimes!. Number 3 and 4 met a much faster death happily and the day ended well with a squirrel for Andy to show for his earlier troubles, And, Pic no.4 a cheesy grin and the last rabbit of the day from me. :toast:

Andy I think you might have snapped me with the rabbit's ghost... There's an orb in the photo to right of me here

yeah it is allways a bad feeling when you miss the instant kill and they scarper injured my little dog is great for that situation but he thinks every time the rifle is fired i have shot one! and goes apeshit, which gets a bit wearin when you are zeroing  now the nights are getting lighter and he is growing up i will start bringing him again.ATB frank

A good read that lads

Sorry to hear about the curse of Ponti affecting your kit again Andy mate :censored: .

Im sure that when you fit your JSR onto your 90 all will be sorted pal and the curse will be expelled.

Well done to you both for the kills, a nice dual mixed bag there.

I went to the hft yesterday and had a really nice time with some of the other lads from this forum.

Thank you Wurz. It is a truly lovely place but it seems to be leaving a :diablo: curse on our friends here! Si you got pipped to the post?!! With the skills I've seen you shoot by??

I rather think lighthunter might have top skill with his rifle, considering how good the competition up against him is, rather than the Heebie Jeebies going on here. :toast:

Well shot at the HFT meet lighthunter; fair play mate :clapper::thumbs: .

Si, Hell on earth is a day without shooting! I reckon you need an income to keep you fed, shed and watered so you can go shoot everyday (wouldn't that be wonderful though!). Heaven is a well stocked farm full of vermin! I'm hoping you can get your fill shooting in Canada and post it up here mate.

All the best

Simon
