How to use a ferret finder

Recommended Posts

Just set it on the highest setting and when you find your ferret and get your first reading move in a circle and start turning it down till you get your lowest reading then i do a X movent and the centre of the X should be the shallowest point to your ferret so start taking the turf off then check your reading in case the rabbits moved and as you dig your hole i check that im still spot on and not going to the side of the burrow

Try putting the collar on the floor and have a play around with the dial on the box.

You should soon get an idea of the different depth readings.

Then you will be familiar with the locator before you go ferreting

I know the rough outline of how to use one but I not fully sure so can someone help me out! Atb :)

Try this for practice. First Insert decent batteries !.

Turn the wheel on the reciever box fully on(that'll be the 15foot or 8 foot mark depending on the model) . The grey box will now be ticking .

Place your collar on the floor and walk away from it until the ticking just stops . You are now out range of the collar.

Now wave the box towards the collar and the ticking will start. Take a step toward the collar.

Now turn the sensitivity dial down until the ticking just(only just ) stops. You have lost contact with the collar .

To regain contact simply wave the box towards the collar and the ticking will restart .

Once again move towards the collar a step and once again turn the sensitivity wheel down until you just (but only just )lose the signal .

By repeating this process of finding the signal ,then deliberatly just (only just mind ) losing it followed by moving until you pick up the signal again you will end up right over the collar.

The next step it to have someone hide the collar in a room while you are not looking and then search for it blind just as if you were seeking a missing ferret .

When the time comes for you to use the locator in the field you will probably end up shambling with an ape-like stoop across the top of a warren whilst swinging the reciever box over the surface of the ground . Once you have picked-up a signal the technique used to move closer to the collar remains the same as it did in your living room .

The main differnce being that instead of lifting a few cushions or peering under a mat to retrieve the transmitter/ferret combination you might need to do a bit of digging :D .

They are very simple devices to use and you should with practice be able to judge the position of the collar down to six inches or less.

Good luck
