So i moved to the third one i had cleared last week netted up checked collar and put him down within a couple of mins he popped up looked at me and went back down and popped up again in the other hole nothing. so is he blind or just useless or am i doing something wrong ..... terry 0
"8 months old never worked untill know" more that likely you are answering your own question, needs time on the job basicly if you are a 100%the hole you are working contain rabbits then thats the case, i know in my area a lot of the ground is holed but the rabbits are actually laying up in the undergrowth apposed to undergrownd, even though they are digging, a lot of sets look like they hold but they are empty except for the odd one then the next are is full, why i dont know terry is it a young ferret or has it been working mate 8 months old never worked untill know Quote Link to post
woodchip 2
did think that but i suppose i was hoping that instinct would take over he seems to know what to do with the ones ive shot. Quote Link to post
FERRETBOY 680
my ferrets are not out and out workers as they can have there bad days.truthfully they are not worked that often so i cant moan.sounds as though your ferret is doing ok for its first outing emerging from another hole says hes searching the warren,a ferrets a ferret it will do what comes natural so keep with him.i think my poley is blind or dosy as she runs into everything in front of her lol but this doesnt affect her hunting. good hunting rew Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
I think you need to give the ferret a bit more time, did you bolt anything from the holes you put him down? Quote Link to post

Guest JDF
woodchip, persistence is the key in this situation just keep at it.unless you have a dog that marks true then it's hard to say if anythings home, seen plenty burrows that look very active have nothing in. all the best. Looking at the pics, and I know that without being there this is not a guaranteed rock solid assessment: those holes don't look too good: there's a lot of rubbish in the entrances and it could be that they are just used for escape holes if danger threatens. You need to find holes where there might be a bit of fresh earth pulled out. I've found that holes that have a lot of rabbit shit at the entrance aren't usually the ones they live in, more likely play/escape holes. Not always true, but very likely. Have you actually seen rabbits in the immediate area? Or seen them run into these holes? Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Pretty much agree with all the above mate. Ferrets young. Ye both inexperianced ~ sounds of it ~ and, well, those burie's don't exactly make me gasp with their eye appeal either! Who threw a hand grenade at that top one there? If ye going to do that to a bury, do it. But then ye'll have to work it. Do that and come back next week? Well, ye've found what to expect. Only way a man can Know there's rabbits in a bury is to see the buggers go down there. Next time, walk ye land and watch out for bun's. Spot one bolt down a hole and it's game on, isn't it? Just tread lightly and try not to make too much noise and fuss. Bit of luck he'll reckon he's home and dry. Then this god awful stink of musti will give him second thoughts about all that. Ever find dead leaves or - god forbid - cobwebs in a bury mouth? Work it out! Water doesn't bode too well either. Fur, caught up on a bramble, can be promising. But feel it to see if it's warm and dry. Wet with dew and it's not so clever any more, but other sign will help tell the story. I like a nice, clean, dry bury mouth, myself. One that makes ye think of a clean tube station. Fresh and clean. Firm and dry under foot ~ or what'd be under the rabbits feet. Just try to think like a rabbit. Would You choose to live down there? Of course, with a season or two under ye belt - and maybe a bit of hands on guidance from a more experianced man - ye'll come to see all this stuff as second nature. And ye ferret will be becoming a veteran too. One ye'll know to trust and whose little ways ye'll read as well as ye will a bury. If it was all That simple, no one would be in awe of the likes of Phil Lloyd and Woodga. Guys who can reap the fur from a stretch of land with such economy and seemingly simply. It doesn't all come together over night. Keep at it. Ye'll get there Quote Link to post
