Simoman 110
Just a question for the experienced digging lads. What is the eldest that a dog has jibbed/jacked/spewed on you? Have some promising terriers worked several seasons and then given up and has any major event led to them quitting? Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
as far as a fox dog goes i've found that once you've got the important first couple of seasons over them then they will stick at it for evermore, the less iron willed may adapt their style to take less punishment but i've never had one jack after that. back when it was legal to take other quarry the story may have been different. Guest Eamon.Mc
It's a hard fact that sometimes a dog will spew, I don't think it matters how old a dog is or how many seasons it's had if they loose the will then shit happens, it could happen at any time, eldest dog I seen spew was abut 6 or 7 if my memory serves me right and he had dug plenty of foxes throughout his career, I personaly had dug to the dog maybe 20-30 times. I was'nt there when he spewed but up until then he could'nt realy be faulted from what I seen of him. Quote Link to post
shitzu 0
depends on how much work its done and how much punishment the dog is willing to take i think the earlier they start the earlier they jack my mate has a 6 year old still working but hes harder than most and has 5 years of hard diggen Quote Link to post

Guest shay
I have seen a few dogs jack over the years, mainly early on after 20 digs or so, rainbow bridge for those ones, however I have seen one dog which was a good badger digging dog in 1980 just before the restrictions were put in place , the dog had seen in the region of 150 brock and give up the ghost at 6yrs. Who knows why, we didn't, it wasn't even a hard dig compared to the ones he had had A dog can also be forced to spew in my opinion by incorrect entering or bringing on in the wrong way, there are so many dickheads that think they have done the lot within a year and go through dogs like I used to go through pints of I have served my apprenticeship now at the digging game, but as we all are I'm still learning each time out, especially when you see other lads dogs work. Shay, This may be a daft question and it wouldn't be the first time I've asked one but what percentage of the pups you bring on make your grade? Quote Link to post
Guest shay
I have only bred 4 litters in about the last 20 yrs, the fourth litter is just nine months old now, each and every pup is showing early promise but only time will tell, I'll let you know in another couple of years on that one, with regards to previous litters the early middleton stuff I used to keep all made it for two litters, bearing in mind they were only small litters, the third litter out some very good blood local to me at the time, out of six pups - 5 dogs and one very very runty bitch all made good headway to making the grade bar one dog, the failure if you like would work but you could see he didn't have the heart of the others, three of these dogs died at an early age so in reality they could well have failed too if they had lived but i very much doubt it. The blood i now keep is not known for failing so fingers crossed. I have been very lucky in not losing too many dogs to ground so generally keep a dog to retirement and get equally as much enjoyment out of seeing other dogs work, many a time mine will be left in kennels to get work for other mates dogs. I can safely say unless something drastic happens I won't be having a litter for another 4 yrs or so. Regards Shay Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Well shay you are getting good results so your breeding, testing and entering must be well thought out Cheers Simon Quote Link to post
Guest shay
I'd prefer to say luck with regards to entering like I said earlier a lot of dogs can be made to spew by going about things the wrong way, the testing can only really start when they are fully mature, yet some lads throw em in anywhere and everywhere at ten months, as far as the breeding goes, thats a lottery isn't it, you can only try the best you have to the best you can get. All the best Shay Quote Link to post
