A question to the coursing guys

Recommended Posts

This a question to the coursing guys but it applys equally to anyone really. I only ask the coursing guys cos they pretty much do most of the breeding lol. I read plenty of posts saying this dog was from this dog, etc etc, and this dog although a great, never threw a good pup. Has there actually ever been a wonder dog that bred a pup better than the parents? You see dogs standing at stud for £750 etc....pups for sale for thousands.... But these great dogs in the past probably came about by accident or were their parents world beaters? So, has their been a dog/bitch which was a top class dog and its pups were consistently better than it or even one pup?

r30 years of breeding.Salukis bred into old fashioned rough lurchers ,then the best to the best or a sticker to a speedy one to complement each other t get what weve got now, dogs with everything

I only make jibes at stupid off the mark comments ! I dont claim to be an expert but do know a bit about a coursing dog.Yeah my old mongrels win matches, but Something purpose bred is not a mongrel. You

to many people in coursing worry about grandparents great grandparents of dog they have instead of concentrating on running and being happy with what they have now...... they breed because of bloodlines instead of performance... i know bloodlines are important but just because its bred from such and such doesnt mean its worth a carrot.... i think certain lines of dogs produce dogs as good as parents..but if you look at the big names in dogs ie..dancer=blondie both greats owned by same guy... snowy and foxy bred and ran by same guy.... captain, splodge ran by same guy..lucky tina etc its more down to the guy feeding and training i think..they have success with a dog breed from it and put same commitment into that one and have success again

Bred a litter of a great bitch in 1994.Six pups. They where all booked before hand.So they all worked with the mother at some time or outher.Only two came realy good. One i kept.(Hawyoo) and Undi,s Meg.Took it,s first roe just under a year old.Unplaned.Just one of thoses things that happen,s now and again.Lost the Mother on the field about sixteen month later. But i think she was by far the better dog.

This is what I wanted to hear, folk who have bred and willing to give an honest account. It will open the eyes of potential newcomer buyers as to what they realistically should expect for their money, no matter the parents and price tag

I bred a litter in 03 out of my nearly half desert bred saluki bitch and Max, (Smokey x Dancer). The pups were all better than the dam and one, my pick Willow, may have reached the level of her sire. But my total profit from the 6 pups was the price of the first jabs, as I gave the ones I wasn't keeping to friends.

I have to add here that I don't remember ever breeding a litter that I made money from.

Thats the one Bluebear, you gave me it back at 13 weeks old because some one told you it looked like a spaniel with the big dropped ears. I gave it to Collie and it killed plenty in Ireland and England, as did the smooth fawn dog he got from the litter, Bucko.

if you bred out of tried and tested parents and give or sell to dedicated hunting chaps you have afar better chance of getting good reports bred a few litters over the last 15 years and get good reports back ,far better than 500 quid in my hands and ive bred of some very good dogs and had dogs of very good parents ,i would say in my line of sport you have to know the game as there more to hunting than slipping on ahare in daylite so a good hunter whose willing to go the extra mile has more chance than a couch potatoe who only wants to talk of breeding ,breeding counts alot but a reral good knowledge of the game you can make mediocre breeding look good, what you cant train is style of chase like yousing angles going up and down gears yousing there brain keeping gam eout of cover thats breing and only comes out in the best usaly and you need the type of land to test them , alot of guys havent had the pleasure to see dogs work ike that

There are several examples dogs which spring to mind where a stud dog produces better pups than himself.Caufields joe is a classic example,he was the sire to lucky which needs no explanation .He also sired the two great bitches which Dell Tomlin bred who have now gone on to be good producers.Nuttalls jack is out of foxy joe and he himself is throwing match winners which are arguably better than he was.Buddy although very well bred (Foxie Charlie),was only an average dog but is producing good tackle.Talking about Charlie he threw Bradfords Luke.Barney was a great fenland dog, although he could kill a hare in a field he wasnt a brilliant field dog. However, he is leaving pups which are winning everything field or fen.
