Simoman 110
I've seen it from both sides, i used to be a dog warden many moons ago and most of the time kennels etc can't be arsed to replace the batteries in their scanner so dogs are missed, trouble is if some scummy low life takes your dogs you are lucky to see them again and usually a microchip makes no difference, in the past i have had dogs chipped and tattooed. P.S. Nice little intro before a plug for your chipping service Quote Link to post
Shazza 52
I micro-chip at dog shows mate, do all sorts of dogs but never any lurchers, don't need to advertise because they come to me I was asking because of all the threads on lost & stolen dogs but never a mention of the dog being micro-chipped or tattoo'd and apart from the dog that went to the guys moms none of the others have been found Quote Link to post

scalesntails 118
Surely if the Labour government wanted a DNA database of the entire nation it can't be too expensive. Maybe someone should start a company that holds dog dna. Then any stray dogs can have their mouth swabbed and checked. Quote Link to post
Strong Stuff 2,171
Have been lucky and never had a dog stolen (they'd soon bring them back anyway! ) But, microchipping isn't foolproof or permanent, I couldn't believe how easily they are removed. I'll be looking for someone to tattoo my latest dog in a few months, he is chipped too, I think a tattoo would be more difficult to remove. Ears are a lot easier to remove than microchips. Happens in the greyhound world a fair bit, poor beggars... I should have said, I meant to get him done on the inside of his thigh, am sure I've seen it on here that someone had that done. lurchergrrl 1,441
Microchips are good things and mine are done ... but chips do fail. And in the eyes of the Law, chips do not prove ownership - tattoos do. Not really clear on why that distinction is made but that's the way it is. So the only time a chip is going to help is if someone bothers to check for one and then track down the owners (people usually forget to update their details on the databases as well). If someone nicks your dogs and you spot it and tell the Law that it's your dog but it's only micro chipped, then you're fresh out of luck if the thief argues that it's his. If you tell the Law it's your dog and you can provide corresponding tattoo proof, then that's that, dog comes back to you. ... or so I've been told, anyway .... Quote Link to post

Simoman 110
Anyhthing to deter dog theif is a good idea, preventive measures at home, cctv, locks, fencing etc, and loosing a dog must be awfull, if your lucky enough to find who took it and where it is the best thing would be to go and kick his cnut in before taking your dog back. Chips and tattoos will help if your dog finds its way to a kennel/vets etc but i also understand why some don't want there dogs chipped........... Quote Link to post
