Cracking write up simon, sory to hear about your trusted rifle andy, I wish it a speedy recovery.

Some great shooting and good fun amoung freinds, thats what its all about

I am surprised there wasnt a big bag taken here though, I know thats not what its about but with all the activity and a little rabbit presence during the day left me thinking it would be like a night club for bunnys out there in the black of night.

Anyway simon, when is your r10 due to arrive?

Perhaps those feretters you spoke of the other day made a dent?

.atb. .ste.

Thanks Ste. Yeah mate you might have a point about these buggers coming on with nets and ferrets but, the permission I have to shoot over is vast. They can't be covering it all and there isn't a bunny anywhere. Si and I did see a couple of adults and a kitt in the daylight during the course of the day so, you might think we were game-on for lamping. Not a thing. My pair were shot at dusk and the early dark. After that it was dead as a doorpost.

Another thing though. After Si had left to get home, Andy and I carried on till about 22.00 hrs and a 4wd on the road that passes the field slowed and shone a searchlight from the drivers window then, backed up and turned onto the track. He got so far down till Andy flashed him with his lamp. This vehicle backed up and took off again.

Lots of things go on like this Ste. It's a pain in the arse but, what can you do?!

sounds like you've got some unwanted competition there simon? maybe it'd be worth setting a wee O.P. up one night and seeing if someones poaching your patch?

hope that not the case for you buddy,

all the best, wurz

Hi Wurz.

Yes mate I think a bit of permission-watch is needed. I've had a word with Ian the landowner and he's gonna get me a list of who has permission. My guests are fine as they are with me under my supervision as it were. A long road runs right through the middle of the land and there's always been some idiot and his mates sniping from a 4x4 with a .22 or 17HMR rimfire and a spotlamp or poaching. Never a police patrol when one would do some good. I'm out with Andy again on Sunday but, I'm off up the whole permission tomorrow to see what else there will be.

Feck me, it's last of the summer wine but with guns! ;)

Nice shooting there guys, gotta love those old springers, deadly in the right hands!

:realmad: :cray: :protest: :rtfm: :11:

Simons got to be Foggy :whistling:

Andy Compo and me Chegg

Si

Dad just really laughed at the idea of him being compo. I think he would take that a compliment! but he is an amzing marksman and sniper. I've seen his medals and things he won in the RAF for his shooting.

probably a good idea then simon, but please go careful buddy-we dont want to lose you to a stray .17 round or a .22 richochete mate.

so you've been converted to mil dots then? i find a mil dot reticle much easier to use, its the only reason i wont be putting a simmons WTC on the stutzen when it gets here-not that i'll need one for long distance shooting for a while-i reckon that a good 3-9x40 or a jsr scope like andy's got'll do the job fine, keeping the profile low on a rifle thats gonna be used between dawn and dusk. i figure that it would make life hard doing any night time shooting with a rifle sans moderator.

hope you solve your mystery mate, and any advice you might have concerning the stutzen's set up will be very gratefully received!

cheers mate,

Hi, folks.

In spite of the Diana's feck up, I had a really great afternoons shooting. The gun's an easy fix and considering how old it is and how much use it's had, I really can't complain too much and I'm lucky enough to have my trusty 90 to fall back on. I really do like that old Diana though but the repair will have to wait a while 'cos I'm a bit skint just now and my car needs a few quid spending on it first :(

Thanks to Simon for the great report and to Si for the pics and video. It's nice to have a proper record for once!!

It's always an education meeting other shooters and the two Simons really are exeptional shots as well as being a pair of first class gents  Between the two of them, there's not much in the way of airgunning and marksmanship in general that they haven't got a bloody good handle on. I always used to consider myself fairly handy with a rifle but I've really had to raise my game with these two!!

It does seem though that Simon's permission is getting some unwelcome attention :hmm: we'll be on the lookout now.

Thanks for all the kind comments, lads

Cheers.

Aww thank you Wurzy mate, I'll be watching for that don't you worry! Pheww that's a rifle I'm very much in love with the look of. But I love shooting vintage military bolt action rifles and your Diana 430 Stutzen has that lovely tapered stock that's got that Enfield SMLE look about it. My HW77 has a similar feel to a Mauser K98 and I'd love a Stutzen stock made for it. Maybe, I might have a go at making that for myself.

As for the Hawke mildots. Oh yeah, now I see how this system is worked out. (Thank you Si!) When I left the RAF and went on shooting an air rifle, I thought the idea of mildots for these "little" guns was bloody stupid, considering how small the ranges are. I came from a world where we used mildot reticles to estimate ranges and target distances that would make your eyes water. Not a bunny at 20 to 40 yards or whatever. The trouble with getting older however, is you turn into a bloody Luddite where anything new is concerned. I must resist that from now on!

Cheers Wurz mate.

Davy. PM sent!

Nice read that

i just wish in Gloucestershire that we could find a permission to shoot over as yours sounds a dream :notworthy:

but with all the bad press at the mo regards air rifles/swans you know what i mean its like looking for a needle in a

haystack

Dave

Hi Dave. Thanks for this mate.

But sorry to hear you are having a job on, finding a permission of your own to shoot. Despite the negative press, farmers and gardeners are always plagued with rabbits and want rid of them. Keep trying. Review how you are going about making approaches to landowners and try try try.

It'll pay off in the end handsomely. You just see!

Thinking about this, it's kind of spooky but. I think this is a pretty good comparison. :icon_eek::thumbs:

Though I like "The Three MUSKETEERS" better!

I am definately Porthos, as Oliver Reed played him.
