Lakelands

Recommended Posts

I know this question was asked before - but there wasn't a lot of actual info about the breed in the replies, for a relative newbie like me - so I thought I'd start it again in the hope I could get some, less contentious, opinions :)

I'm thinking about getting a terrier to use to flush rabbits from cover to my whippets. As well as this the dog I would want would need to tick the following boxes

1) Be KC reg - yes I know many will sneer at this - and I understand all of the reasons why, however hunting with my dogs is hobby for ME. The misuses (and the kids) enjoy the showing (and fair / meetings) side of things - again not seriously but they have fun doing it, so I'd want a dog they could do it with - obviously I'd be looking for working lines but it would still have to be a pure breed type of dog.

2) It won't be used on foxes, hares etc (have no interest in that) just flushing / chasing rabbits, but it has to have stamina.

3) Have an even temperament and get on well with the other dogs and the kids (again I'm aware that getting a pup will help with both of these - but some breeds are naturally better at these things than others, terriers can be a pain with other dogs) as I would want it to live in the house with the rest of the family & dogs.

Would a Lakeland fit? - would anything else suit better?

Does anyone know of any working Lakeland owners planning litters

Constructive comments please!

Thanks

Dan

Not being funny pal, but have you ever seen a kc lakey? They are worlds away from even half arsed bred working lakeys.

Also, you do know you can show non kc lakeys at the hundreds of country fairs there are, along with all other types of working terrier.

Lakies are brilliant bushers but do tend to be a bit bloody minded when it comes to sharing prey, but I suspect that with the right training a lakie would be brilliant, good with people but can be jealous of other dogs, mind you I am a bit prejudiced as I have two cracking lakies!!!!!!!!!! :bye::bye:

Sounds like a larger type working bedlington would fit the bill, a bigger sort thats not going to go to ground on yer, but enough hunt to push through gorse and the like after bunnies, either that or like someone else said a springer or cocker, but then your getting in to serious Hyper dogs with probably way more energy than you might want.

ATB with what you decide
