Ron Weasley 83
Now then airgunners! I haven't been able to get out as much as I would like recently (who can?) so I've been chomping at the bit! The owner of one of my permissions has been on the phone a lot recently about the rabbits in his garden. The trouble is, he's an hours drive away, so I just haven't had opportunity to get there. Anyway, with no work on today, I set myself up for an early start, planning to get there just before first light. The permission is about three or four acres of what used to be paddocks, but has been turned into ornamental gardens. The bulk of it is rabbit fenced, but the actual lawn just in front of the house has been under some sustained attack from the bunnies lately! I got out of bed at 0415hrs this morning, and was on my way by 0440hrs. I arrived just as light was breaking, at about 0530. I crept slowly through the gateway, and through a fence to allow me to walk around to the opposite side of the lawn. As soon as I was through the fence, I could see two rabbits at around 40 and 45 yards. They were definitely shootable where they sat, but I felt more comfortable reducing the range. I stalked about 10 yards, until I was 30 yards away, and alongside an outbuilding, and settled the crosshairs on the base of the skull of the nearest rabbit from a kneeling position. Let the shot off, and with a quick somersault, the first was in the bag. The second one just sat bolt upright at the sudden death of his comrade, so I cycled the R10s bolt, gave it one mildot of holdover and squeezed off the shot. I MISSED! Almost certainly due to mis-estimating the range, my shot skimmed over the bunny's head! Anyway, he made the mistake of bolting towards the rabbit proofed ornamental garden. There's just one place that they can breach the proofing by squeezing under the gate, and that's exactly what it did. I watched the bunny run around the perimeter, until it came to a stop to survey the danger. Resting on a fence post, the shot was true and the second one was in the bag! After that, it quietened down some. I walked the perimeter of the permission, and took a woody from the top of a tall conifer with a perfect neck shot from the standing position. At this point, and gathered up the bag and took a photo A few minutes later, another woody landed atop a different conifer tree. I was standing almost at the base of the tree, so it wasn't more than 40 feet away, but I managed to miss! At this point, the landowner opened the door and said that the kettle was on! I went in for a coffee, and took the rifle with me (I usually lock it the boot of my car). After we'd been chatting for half an hour or so, I spotted a couple of bunnies out of the window in the garden. I went through to the adjacent room to give a better angle, slowly opened the window and let the pellet do the talking! That was it for the day. The photo of the final bag was taken when I got home. 4 Quote Link to post

markha 99
A nice write up Ron, it was also my 'intention' to get out early this morning, just never happened though, so another day of office work. Tomorrow will be an early start for definite, got some crows to drop. Quote Link to post

Ron Weasley 83
Thank you gents! Hope you get your crows Markha! Nice going Ron A very nice mixed bag there and a happy land owner i expect. What calibre you using pal? Si. .22 mate, using Falcon Accuracy Plus pellets at the moment. As shabby as they look, they're doing the business in my R10! Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,589
Oh my God it's her ....again! It's alright Ron I'm having serious issues with myself over buying a BSA R10 since shooting with Si's .22 customised version the other day. Yours looks bloody lovely too, especially as it's a full-length one, I think, by the look of the pics. My compliments on getting out early and doing the business. A good bag, well shot mate . zini 1,939
Do it Simon, Dont fight the feeling and pull of the Fellowship of the r10 Si. Hi Ron, I did try them .22 Falcons in my r10 at the weekends at Andys but my barrel didnt like them. I think its because i was using a BSA Ultra barrel though mate as every other person with a r10 i know have great results with them. Im back on my 15.98 grain RWS Super Fields that i was using at Simon permission the other day. My barrel likes them and shoots them ok. Si Quote Link to post
rossi_j 99
Top shooting ron Unlucky on the missed shots, near vertical shots are always a bit tricky to pull off. Nice bag mate, well deserved after getting up at the crack of dawn and travelling an hour .atb. .ste. Quote Link to post
Ron Weasley 83
Thanks everyone. Simon, yes it is full length. It's completely standard at the moment, with an HW silencer (bough from Si). I'm planning on having the barrel shroud shortened too though, much like Si's, by Adrian at A&M just as soon as I can free the currency! Even straight out of the box as this one is, it's a superb rifle, and you'd be wise to consider one if you are resigned to getting a precharged rifle! Si, mine also likes Accupells, Superdomes and Daystate Rangemaster Li's. Not fussy at all really! I'd like to try the RWS Superfields and perhaps some FX pellets (my .177 ultra loves the FX ammo), but it's difficult to know when to stop! Quote Link to post
markha 99
I must admit, even though I own a very good rifle, I too have been drawn towards the R10 and find myself trawling the internet for the best deals!!!!!! Thing is, I just cant seem to 'find a need' to get one. Quote Link to post
Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi Ron. What a good morning, nice bag, excellent write up and pics too Your lucky getting coffee served up on your permission, how old is she Just got back from Holls, so hope to get out again soon myself. ATB. Bill. Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Yep the r10 is starting to get a better rep now and more of a fan club. There still is the odd bad apple but thats just the same with any brand of rifle. The good ones that are now being produced are just as good as any hunting sub 12 fp rifles on the market. I surpose its also down to how that rifle feels for you in the shoulder. The HW100K and T are awesome rifles too but my r10 just is a extention of my body that why when i needed to sell rifles due to being skint the HW's went. Nothing to do at all with the r10 being a better rifle because its not. It just feels better for me. Si Quote Link to post
77 si 21
A good read that pal, nice shooting. Quote Link to post
gurtwurz 792
nice work ron mate! those falcon pellets really do the job in my hw95- i think theyre a cracking pellet mate. they fly quite flat for .22 as well, i found that after re-zeroing my rifle to 27.5m they were within an inch killzone from 10m out to 30m easy.(thanks ti si for doing the work on chairgun for me!!!) i didnt feel as comfy with the R10 as i do with a hw100 but it is definitely the best looking pcp out there, the lines on the stock just flow beautifully, makes the hw100 look, well, quite german by comparison... cheers, wurz Quote Link to post
