SeanTheHawker 0
Headed out this morning with my mate malcolm. rolf weighed in at 1lb 5.6 and Malcolm’s bird, cal, weighed in at 1lb 5.25 so was to be a good day. we arrived very early, and was a nice frosty morning. took rolf out first, first set was empty, then we crossed into a field where a hedgerow had recently been cut down, first set was empty, the second wasn’t. within a few minutes a rabbit bolted into the wind heading for a gate at the bottom of the field. rolf clipped it as it got under the gate, but wasnt fast enough getting back on to terms with it. as I was walking back to the set another rabbit bolted, this time up the field, rolf was soon of and nailed it a good 100 yards from the slip, nice flight 1st of the day. tried a few more sets but were empty. then done another set that was along side an old lane, ferret in, and rabbit bolted from the far side of the lane! the rabbits were under it lol. rolf rose high up over the ditch and got to terms with it, didn’t hold it, and then chased again, clipping it again just as it got under an upturned bath, again not holding. Headed across the lane and a field, that had plenty of sets, but only one was occupied. bolted one, which Rolf chased back into the set. then it rebolted into thick brambles, rolf rose to have a look, then stopped. he missed and the rabbit leged it up the ditch, while rolf was coming through the brambles like a terrier. the rabbit then crossed the ditch and complety over into the next 2 ditches! rolf did manage to catch up as it crossed the first, but when we got there we found him with no rabbit, one for next year lol. next field produced a lovely rabbit that bolted down the hedge, but when it seen malcolm waving like a buck egit lol it decided to cross the field into the next dutch, rolf soon caught it,not far from the ditch. next set was empty. then in the next set, which was along a suck, a rabbit came to the hole, with the ferret pulling it back in, tried to grab them to save a dig, but too late. waited a few minutes then dug.as i was digging the bloody ferret finder fell into the shuck! well as you guessed, no signal on the ferret. we searched and searched, dug and dug, but the ferret wasnt were we first located him. was panicing incase he had went out and we missed him. then after ages, had a genius plan lol, put malcolms ferret down with his mark 3 collar and finder. both ferrets came above ground playing, in the box they went! spent over an hour at that! next set was empty. then decided it was cal's turn to fly, so headed to a set near the car, and then was to call it a day. ferret down, me at one end, malcolm at another. fairly big set, maybe 15 - 20 holes. after a few minutes malcolm starting doing some strange sign language, then he shouted ho, there it was, rabbit bolted over to a ditch to my left, rolf cut over and caught it by the arse. after a bit of a strugggle i managed to secure it. rabbit number three, and just in time too. fed rolf up while malcolm headed bakc to the car to get cal's transmitter and food ready. so headed to the first set, resulted in a dig, but by the time we had pinpointed it with the mark3 the ferret was up. next set, a rabbit bolted by side of the ditch, cal hit it in the arse, but didnt hold, then it turned back up the ditch, but cal didnt get back on terms with it. the next set was a big one, ferret down, malcolm indicated he heard thumping. few minutes later still nothing, so he started searching for the ferret. then i seen a rabbit sneaking along the hedge, shouted ho, and it bolted, malcolm leaned over the hedge and cal was off. it didnt get to far before cal was onto it. bang! two feet to the head. malcolm wanted a single kill feed up, so got the ferret back, gave cal his big reward and heading home, 2 happy falconers, 2 happy harris hawks Quote Link to post
