Well bud.In my book an untrained dog is an actsident waiting to happen.What more can i say.

 

Totally agree! But would you consider a dog you can not call off any chase when you want untrained?

 

 

Never.The two dogs i could call off had to be done just as they started to go.When the dogs off it,s off and know one can call it back.

 

Are right, i thought thats what you were saying, like that Big Zook tit, and i thought you were mental Yer if the dogs by your leg you can over ride the situation, but once the dogs gone and running it'd be an impressive thing (or a sad one) to see a man be able to switch the dog off. It doesnt bare much relevance where we hunt as often the dog is off out of sight, so it just needs to know what is ok or not. Or the dog is marking something you can see and skitch it into. Or the chase is under your feet.

They where still broke to livestock at a young age.That way you have few problems.

Yes mate, but thats a standard for ANY dog, no matter the breed, working or not. All dogs need to be ok with people and stock. All i was saying is that we break the dogs to what we need to then let them go on the hills and they NEED to be super broken to stock etc, cos very often i'm no where near when they encounter stock or game, and the stock often comes in the form or a lone ragged sheep, that suddenly bursts out of cover and runs over the hill. I wasn't arguing with you

cheers guys,i'm pleasantly surprised, when i started this thread i thought i would get a lot more replies from the dreamer / internet hunters. ive been hunting bunnies since i was a lad now in my 50's and thought i was a wee bit old fashioned expecting a wee bit too much from my dogs. i think i could stop her chasing or call her off anything except a rabbit maybe a lot to do with her upbringing but i'm sure in her mind the only good rabbit is a dead one, although shes almost steady to rabbits kicking in a long net, happy to leave them to me and continue hunting up. for me the only other query is how your dogs are bred, is it reasonable to expect this type of obedience from anything other than collie or beddy crosses?
