Ok, Ive turned into my driveway a few times and seen this massive dog fox skulking about the field a few times in the past 2 weeks. Hes a big boy, I could see him over the sugarbeet from 100 yards away, and he runs as soon as the headlamps swing round,so hes lampshy and an old one with lots of knowledge. The drive is about 200 yards long, and my house is at the bottom with the big field opposite it (next to the driveway), this has now been ploughed and topped, so nice and smooth. Doing loads of work around the house so it has got a full set of scaffolding around it, so it shouldnt be a problem when wanting to shoot him as I can get high and a good position.

What I want to know is how can I shoot him without waiting around all night. Im quite experienced when it comes to foxes.

I have several options I have thought:-

1) Bait an area everyday, and leave an alarm clock there with some fishing line attached to the back of the battery, so when he takes the bait the wire will pull the battery out of the clock and I will get a rough time over a week and wait for him around this time. Alot of effort but may be worth it.

2) Use some kind of sensor attached to the bait while im in the house and when hes taking it I can nip out, get my old man to lamp quickly and bosh.

3) Use a cage trap and check everyday.

Please advise me on what you would do.

You already know what time he will be about cos you light him up when you get home! I would try to lamp him using a coloured filter. If that dont work i would watch to see what way he goes then festoon the area with snares. This is only an option if nobody walks their dogs there! Cage traps are not very effective for clever foxes.

Pre-baiting traps always pays off in the long run.

Having gained the foxes confidence in entering the trap and associating the trap with a 'safe' place to feed.

After about a week of replenishing the food, set the trap, hey presto, the fox.

Cat food is a good bait medium to attract foxes.

I personally check traps twice a day or get the customers to agree to do the checks.

As the traps are not pest specific, domestic cats and hedgehogs are caught by accident too.

Non-pest species can be safely and quickly released unharmed, but well fed & watered !!

A safe dispatch should of course be preformed upon capturing the fox(es).

The releasing of the fox elsewhere may contravene The Animal Welfare Act 2006.

This craic of having the intended quarry entering the trap to gain his confidence and then when he feels safe set the trap to catch him makes absolutly no sence to me whatsoever.

I can understand it for the likes of a multi-catch trap such as for rats but with a fox ?????

Exactly..........if you can do enough to entice them into the cage in the first place then you want to be catching them first time. Never have seen the reason behind letting them walk back out again. I have caught 100's of foxes in cages and have never yet pre-baited an unset cage.

I take your point entirely.........but if you do it right first time you shouldn't need multiple visits
