starting a lurcher puppy

Recommended Posts

What do you mean when you say it "won't kill"? Are you saying it chases and catches but doesn't kill them [rabbits], if so you ain't got a problem. Or does it chase but doesn't catch?

Either way I wouldn't worry as it's only 7 months old, far better to let it be a pup and concentrate on obedience work during the spring and summer. When the new season arrives it'll be older, more mature and raring to go.

My lurcher is 6 month old and until recently (last 4 or 5 weeks) he showed no interest at all.

I haven't encouraged him as i don't want him starting too early.

But we would be out on a walk and the other dogs would give chase and he would just watch and look at me as much to say "are they stupid"?

Then we were on a walk about 4 weeks ago and he started showing alot of interest, sniffing bushes and running with the other dogs and he hasn't stopped since. I know if something got up in front of him he would pursuit.

Its like the penny just dropped one day.

No rush though mate. I still wont be encouraging him until he is 12 months or so. Just gonna get him watching the other dogs on the lamp early next season before trying him.

i hav got a problem my 7 month old bullgrey salukigrey / collie whippetgrey just wont kill has [NO TEXT TALK] got any ideas i hav never had this problem before all the pups i have bred hav al started work straight away i just dont no what to do. any ideas???

The pups drive hasn't kicked in , different pups develop at different stages, its not uncommon for some not to expierence the emotion of their drive til 10-12 months, in the meantime try and get him focused on you by playing fetch or similar games, this will develop drive , and is great for bonding,,best of luck
