I wouldn't risk that to be honest, all you need is one of them to run in front of the bike and you've got a dead dog and probably an injury to yourselve aswell! Why not get a mountain bike?

peddle bike is much more safe, i go on forest tracks and do alot of road work with my bitch...takes them a while to learn commands to know when to turn and slow down and go faster but its great fun in the forestry but be very carefull on the roads as people dont like to allow extra space or slow down

Just a quick question of my own (sorry if I'm hijacking the thread!). My pup is 9 months old next week, I've been sort of steadily ramping up the exercise (swimming, fetching, longer walks etc). At what point can you sort of stop being cautious with the exercise? Is it literally when they've stopped growing or is it still advisable to take it easy for a while after that? I understand that running prey on a young dog but's a lot of stress on joints, lungs and muscles but can you put too much strain with just routine exercise such as this? My pup is a real pain in the arse if she's not really thorough exercised every day (2 hours plus of walks).

Again, sorry for hijacking the thread but it is related.

i personally wait till 12 months to do proper hard excercising and like to wait to start dogs working (i go by the rule wait a few extra months and gain a couple extra years which was said to me by a very wise dog man). I know you have to wait till 18 months with greatdanes to let them have a good run about but they are massive in comparison. general mooching, playing and general clarting about shouldnt do your pup any harm in my opinion as the muscles and tendons have to experience some sort of strain to develope. Hope this helps :)

I know what your saying and agree in many senses. . . . but how exactly do you manage this? (The stopping excercise until 12 month?) Also if you dont let the dog stretch and chase proper until 12 month or over. . . . do you not get a lot of injuries? I think if dogs were held back until that age on the land we worked we would lose a lot of dogs killed, in the first month of their working life.

I had a small Fergie tractor, when I had sheep, and my wife would run the two Collies behind the tractor, this went okay for Months, then one day the young collie who was just starting to work well, turned into the front wheel and broke a shoulder, and had a lengthy lay off, so I would say don't run them behind Motorbikes and tractors.

Had the same on a mates farm, dog that had always run with the tractors, totally knew the score, was running in front and then must have hit a scent and for some reason just stopped stock still and went straight under the wheels.

Yer it might not go wrong, but if it does and you run over your dog, what kind of dick will you feel like? If the dog aint chasing cars/motor bikes then its A LOT less likely to go under one!

Well it couldn't of bin behind the tractor to hit the front wheel personally I think as long as you can make sure your dog is behind you 100% then ther no problem of you hitting the dog I did this for 2years and all sorts of situations popped up but Neva have I hit or nearly hit my dog because I was always past the problem each to there own though I suppose I wouldn't do some thing others might do with there dogs happy hunting and a good debate so far let's keep this 1 that way atb
