my brothers staff was due to have her pups yesterday she eventually had them today but she ate the first four pups how made is that! manage to save the one pup, has this ever happen to any one else?

If the bitch eats her pups it is usually a sign of something else, such as:

 

* Bitches sometimes eat pups that smell different to the rest because they were handled by the owner too soon (not saying you did that!)

* Bitches sometimes eat pups if the litter is too large an she cannot feed/cope with them all.

* They also eat pups that are stillborn because a dog subconsiously knows that a corpse attract predators near.

* Sometimes a bitch eats pups if she is stressed/scared.

* I have also heard of bitches eating pups if they are very young mothers and don't really understand what to do.

* I was also told by a pal that bitches can sense the abnormal hormone levels very ill pups have (just like with humans) and eat them rather than waste time/energy on a doomed cause

seen it happen afew times with terriers they will break the pup an eat it the trick is to catch them before they break it an stick it down her neck whole the bitch will choke on it but will get it down she wont be keen to eat any more

shes about 7 and has had one litter be for

did not no she already had 3 or 4 until she had though them up

this is the one i saved, manage to grab the pup as the head come out before she had chance to eat it, my little lakeland bitch has adopted her witch had a litter the day before, its the one with the white spot on her neck
