you have done well if he will retrieve a dummy. it is now just a matter of progression.when there are young rabbits about i would shoot one. tease him with it then try retrieves.dont worry if this takes time. some dogs are a bit wary of retrieving dead rabbits for the first few times.just dont overdo it.you can do this through the year.until he is retrieving a full grown dead rabbit.just take your time plenty of praise when he gets it right. when the season starts again try him on the lamp good luck. i always started pups with dummys then moved on to gundog dummies [rabbit skin covered] then moved to dead rabbits. a young rabbit or squirrel makes a ideal size/weight for a dogs introduction to dead/cold game.

i have never used one to be honest. but if you can go out on your own shoot a young rabbit when they are about. then tease him with it. even if means tying a string round it pulling it around in front of him but not letting him have it. then try a retrieve. with some dogs it takes a while before they will retrieve cold game. patience and perseverence good luck.

Is he out with you on his own, or is there other dogs about?

Some dogs will play second fiddle to other dogs, and wont do anything they fear will get them in trouble with the more dominant dog.

The dog is still young though at 17 months so hopefully it'll collar on and will start retrieving sooner rather than later.
