secretagentmole 1,701
Dropped off at mid day at the permission, could see loads of bunnies on the tracks. What to do? If I walk down the track they will see me, if I go across the ditch, into the out of visual range, they will hear me! They might ignore the sound because of the road 100 yards away! Leap ditch like flying hippo! Struggle up bank with game bag containing insulin, lunch, hypo recovery kit, camera, lights, batteries, never been any game in it, gun and my shooting mat! Get into fallow field, trying to avoid everything that makes a sound and as a result sound like an elephant moving blindly through a jungle at midnight. Manage to put bags down and get rifle out. Crouch to edge of brambles, can see one rabbit left, lay down and crawl over baby nettles, ouch, darn, drat, blast, fork, etc! Bunny approximately 35-40 yards away, I raise Ken and sight up, zero wind, overcast, I take aim, slowly pressing on the second stage of trigger and thwack, bunny in air! What did I get? I got this! Ok, so it's ears may have been blasted off by a shotgun in the past, it may be small, it may be scraggy, but goddammit it is my kill, I got it and I am going to eat it! Simon's tips about staying out of sight, using camo (even if it is cheap NBC that gets hot in sunlight), taking your time and prone position shooting are worth their weight in gold! (Edited as I forgot Simon's apostrophe)! Further edit, later on whilst having a bit of liquid relief in the ditch, I spotted a fiver in the brambles as well! Not a bad day! secretagentmole 1,701
No wonder it did not hear me, lugs are shot to ribbons, honest I did only take ONE shot at it! Went up, flash of white, lay on it's side and did the shuffle, and it was nowhere near a damned ditch! Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
Heyyyy what can I say moley! You flatter me very much but, what I write is what I know works from some well proven principles..or not, as the case may be. Glad it's worked for you mate. Now, go do it again. In the brain next time. looks like you hit it in the cheek under the eye. Poor bugger's fought it's last battle though alright. Well done moley Simon Edited March 18, 2011 by pianoman Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Simon I will be back, lol, I have seen another pure black coney down there, that makes 2 on that permission. One in the paddock field, the other by the top edge of my permission, so one close in another at the top. They make you look those things! Must work on the combat crawl though, keep hands out of young nettles! This time I am glad there was no ditch for the bun to sink in! In fact the only ditch I was near with any water in paid me back for my deposit in it! I am upset that I scared the other pair that were on the track, they were twice the size of the shot rabbit. But only by keeping bashing on can I get up to a reasonable standard of hunter! Practise is what it takes, so I must practise. Unlike your previous training my life does not depend on it, so learning is harder! I am finding that a carbine is easier to use in the field though, easier to move without being seen. I must change that scope though, it does not gather light as well as the Hawkes or Tascos we have. Quote Link to post
