blan89 159
its pretty simple imo you need 100% control of your dog's at all times, whether that be by using a lead or just having a very high standard of obedience,if you cant completely guarantee that they will do exactly as you say off lead then keep them on,if your dog does any damage while off lead even if it wasnt its fault you automatically lose. most people shouldnt let their dogs off lead at all in public. Moll. 1,770
The odd time i do walk them in civilisation i am ultra cautious. If i see someone approaching with dogs, they go on the lead, the same if i come to a blind bend and i cannot see what is coming. It is not worth the risk, my dogs need to be sociable around others for hunting, are quite capable of seriously injuring or killing another dog, and other dogs the same to mine, they are too valuable to me to end up with some injury ending/ limiting their work or preventing me from hunting with others and their dogs. Dogs are not 100% safe in any situation, they can change for no reason whatsoever...even the most laid back of dogs. I've had many an altercation with people who do not give my dogs the same respect, i've lost count of the amount of time i am told "Its ok he wont fight" as he tries to plough into mine on leads...hard work keeping hold of several lurchers and terriers once fired up in fight mode. Not the dogs fault but the gormless owners who have no understanding of any dogs mentality and who think of their dogs as little people
bobslurchers 1
I am always very cautious when letting my lot meet other dogs I meet on walks, as most of the dogs round here are pedigree pets. As if mine are on lead and their dog is off lead and comes running up to mine, that I can control my dog as its on lead. I have one daft dog with perfect recall who I can trust to meet all other dogs, if she doesn't like the look of them she will back off. I will put all my others on lead if I see another dog approach, they are all OK with other dogs but wont back down if challenged. I am quite happy letting my dogs meet other on lead dogs so long as they appear friendly, but if not I would rather steer clear - I will avoid vet bills if I can. JPTfellterrier 65
well talking of this i had a incident today. Tilly was having a good day which is rare at the minute had passed a couple of dogs without a problem....was coming up to this women with a fat little minuiture shnauzer too busy blabering on to someone she new to take notice of me coming along....and what happened the little b*****d went for tilly....luckily this was on a good day and just holding her up by her collar stopped her trying to rag it (alot of growling and riggeling but not too bad) if it was on a bad day i wouldnt have been able to hold her...i proceeded to get a hold of the little fat schnauzer to which she put it on the lead. Me personally I am more concerned for the little dogs safety than my own as if she got a hold there would be no going back. I usually have tilly muzzled but it was such a open space (park land) i can usually avoid people
DOVEY182009 12
It's usually the wolly holding the lead constantly on edge wich causes bother. My mothers x partner used to constantly getting nervous and picking his dog up rusulting in my saluki (wich was a pup at the time) and his dog constantly wanting to get amongst it. When he wasn't there they were fine with eachother.
