Jordb543 9
I was walking my 3 dogs in the park today, they where all off the lead running round and theres load of people doing the same with their dogs etc, im walking along the path where it narrows and some woman walks round with her dog on a flexi lead sees my three and reels her dog in as quickly as she could, like most dogs mine go to sniff it etc and her dog wants to do the same so i think nothing of it walk past and say hi, 2 seconds later i hear " will you call your bloody dogs!" they had literally been there for 3seconds tops, so i took the high ground ignored the crazy bitch carried on walking and my 3 followed, about 20mins later im walking across the rugby pitch and she appears with her dog and is right next to my 3 so naturally the same thing happens, and she goes mental so i told her to "get lost and loosen up maybe try letting her dog off once in a while it may enjoy it" but unfortunately not so politely but not aggressive or anything lol she deserved it she had ago at me twice lol. its got me so angry so i thought id vent it all out here lol, whats the point of owning a dog if your not going to let it socialize with other dogs? i mean i know some dogs may need to be kept on a lead but when your dog is pulling and wagging its tail excited by the other dogs what do you expect? obviously loose dogs will approach it from time to time, am i right or wrong? i dont think i have been unreasonable have i? shepp 2,285
Bollocks! I walk mine round a park full of dogs and there's never a problem because they are well socialised and obedient. I know, some women have no idea and live in a state of constant panic.
terrierjohn 49
well i was walking past the shop along the road from my house and heres these 3 labs tied to the fence while the owner was in the shop as i get within about 4/5yrds the 3 of them come charging across the pavement and have a go at my terrier bitch my bitch wont start a fight but she's a terrier so she wont back down so me being me i just stand there cos well basically i'm not walking onto the road because of 3 daft potlicking labs (no offence lab-tastic lol i know you like your labs)but these were potlickers well after about must only have been 20/30 seconds this wee old woman appears with a knida smirky smile and said "she's a game one" i said she's game enough to tango with they potlickers of yours she replies "well there not fighters" could have bloody fooled me it was her daft monkeys that had a dash at my dog not the other way about some folk dont have a clue about dogs and some folk claim to know their dogs but really they dont which this wee old woman clearly never had a clue about her own dogs
Hannah4181 260
I tend to judge the other owners reaction at seeing my dogs off lead, if they are panicing and putting there's back on lead, then i call mine into heal whilst we pass. Excluding my terrier all my dogs are friendly and sociable, the bitch will stand her ground if another dog has a pop at her, but generally it never materialises into anything more than noise. Strange dogs meeting off lead will always lead to problems, IMO they are best left to it, there's normally enough room for one to get away if it needs to, it takes a highly dog aggressive dog to get a serious fight started. A bit of noise and argy bargy is best ignorned in my experience, they will soon sort out who's dominant and end any issues. I was doing some water retrieve training with the lab earlier this week at the local water meadows ....... we were suddenly met by another obviously young lab, it was stupidly excited and desperate to play, i put the dummy away and released my dog from his stay to allow him to play. My dog jumped into the river and the young lab followed him, suddenly i hear the most horrendous scream, followed by " KATIE, KATIE, COME COME COME COME ", the women in mad panic then waded into the river up to her knees to try and grab her dog, screaming as she went "KATIE CAN'T SWIM I'VE NEVER TAUGHT HER!!"  I was hysterically laughing! ! Once i'd told her to chill out and got her chatting, "Katie had a fabulous time"!

Personally i consider it common courtesy to put a dog on a lead when passing anouther unless the dogs know one anouther
pegleg33 134
Put it this way if her dog took offence to your dogs sniffing around and went for them and yours retaliated and hers got injured, you would be hel responsible as your dogs weren't on a lead. Sorry if it seems i'm taking the moral high ground i'm not, i'm just trying to make you aware of the law.I never walk my dogs on a lead except if i'm near a busy road, i do however call my dogs to heel as soon as i seen anyone with dogs coming towards me
chalkedup 14
i always appreciate others putting theres on a lead when im walking mine unless they have met before in general if a dogs on a lead its on it for a reason, mines mostly ok with his tail wagging when meeting but off the lead he can get funny with other dogs even ones hes met before and been fine with if her dog latched on to one of yours what would you be saying? if it was me and mine rared up at one and your other two joined in and i laid the boot in who would be in the wrong? me or you? jack pyke 4
iallways call my dogs to heel and put on lead when i see other people coming towards me but you allways get the profesional dog trainer walking towards you with their leaders round their necks and their dogs running free my dogs are allright and in my experiences its allways border collie dogs they think their so well behaved untill they get near you then they start running round in circles trying to nip my dogs sending mine mad then you get the pro dog trainer shouting sorry mate hes never done that before end up arguing and telling them to put their dogs on the leader wankers
Jordb543 9
I understand what your all saying, i probably did over react abit, the 1st instance was at the side of the lake which has massive reeds everywhere and she came round the corner and my dogs where already there mooching by the reeds, its also very narrow so we had to pass each other anyway so nothing i could of done there really, the 2nd time we came in close proximity again, and i think the way she reacted made the whole thing worse, she started kicking off as soon as she saw mine, so they sort of homed in on her, as soon as i said my piece i called them and they all came straight to heel, i probably just should of called them straight away that time but she really annoyed me the way she reacted the 1st time, ive been walking my dogs there all my life, most people have their dogs off the lead and they all socialise, play etc, its the best place to socialise dogs with other dogs and i think people hwo live in my area are lucky to have it, obviously some dogs are on a lead but the owners are usually calm which tends to result in their dogs being the same and my dogs will ignore it, there are usually anywhere from 15 to 30+ dogs there at any given time so ocasionly a few barks are exchanged or the odd chase but i find if the dogs are off their leads it results in nothing more then one dog chasing off another, a few times i have seen two leaded up dogs drag their owner around and have massive fights with other dogs as they cant get away, i understand if a dog attacks your dog then your likely to be abit annoyed, a few times some dogs have bit one of mine or tried to i put it down to dogs being dogs, and mainly down to owners not having much control, i wouldnt hold a grudge, and i certainly wouldnt flip if a loose dog came near mine on the lead. i also find its the house dogs that only get walked around on a lead once/twice aday for 20mins or so that are the most boisterous and un-socialised, the ones that are off the leads playing fetch/swimming/running around with other dogs etc burning off the most energy are the calmer more obidient dogs, jmo, im over it now anyway Edited March 19, 2011 by Jordb543
scalesntails 118
One of mine was attacked by 3 dogs while he was on the lead. I now have to keep him muzzled while on the lead as he can bark at other dogs and snap at them if they come near him while he is on the lead. The moment I unclip his lead he will be friendly and playful with any dog. Luckily my dogs only ever get put on the lead for 300 yards then we get to the countryside and then they stay off the lead the rest of the time. Sarah1985 0
I agree, I think it's important that dogs socialise, especially off the lead as so many dogs get lead aggression. I usually read what the others dogs bady language is doing. If it looks friendly and the owner is relaxed then I'll let her go up to other dogs, if the person is struggling or the dog has a muzzle on then I'll call her away (and if you're dog does bite it should have a muzzle on as well as a lead as dogs can get loose off their leads). I try not to let her run full pace up to another dog though as I think that's a bit inconsiderate. If you're dogs are trained then it's fine. I've had to get hold of other people dogs before though as they couldn't get them back which is annoying. Last night someone's dog followed mine who was on her lead as near a road which I was walking towards and the owner was just on his mobile and didnt even call his dog. What would he have done if I had actually crossed the road and his dog followed?! I actually stopped, got hold of his dog and waited for him to come and get it (we were about 5m away from the road at this point). I think people should pass a common sense test before getting a dog!!
