30 acre minimum?

Recommended Posts

I've just had some land turned down because it was deemed to be too small by my FLO and didn't meet the 30 acre minimum "requirment". Having just spoken to the landowner, I've been informed that my FLO didn't even bother checking the land, just said it it was below 30 acres and went home without even leaving the kitchen. I've since found some more land and I'm still hoping to get my FAC, however I've never heard of a 30 acre minimum and I'm pretty peeved she didn't even bother to check the land.

As soon as my FAC comes through I'm going to make a formal complaint against my FLO and get the BASC involved.

My FLO is absolutely rubbish though: she hasn't got a clue about anything.

Yes I have heard of minimum acreage for centrefire calibres up here in North Wales, I have also heard from BASC that its difficult to get centrefire with anything less than 100 acres in North Wales, as I also had a problem, not with land size, but it did come up in the conversation.

If your application is for rimfire then that is a very strange thing indeed.

If I was you I would ring BASC up and have a chat with them before going any further.

In short, yes.

What are the rough dimensions of the land, I know how big 30 acres is but it is long and thin or closer to a square.

Just to clarify that, if the land was prefectly square it would be 381x381 yards

Might be worth a letter to the firearms licensing manager first, then go to BASC if that doesn't do any good!

Depending on the ground, 30 acres might be too small for HMR but Sec 1 airgun should be fine! She should definitely have looked at it though!

Which constabulary is it, just out of interest?

Out of interest why did you choose HMR and section 1 air gun rather than a quiet and cheap to feed .22LR which, on the face of it, seems appropriate, although some forces (quite wrongly in my view) seem to favour the HMR on the questionable grounds that it is less likely to ricochet.

Did your FLO make any suggestions along those lines or just veto your application based on the land area. Another scenario is that she does not think you are suitable and is using land area as an excuse.

It certainly sounds a bit unreasonable, if not unprofessional.

Do let us know how you get on and as others have said, join and seek advice from BSAC. Talk to them BEFORE you talk to the police, BSAC are on your side and will advise you how best to proceed.

BASC are fecking useless mate, join SACS and they will have you shooting on your 30n acres tomorrow.there is no such thing as a minimum acreage, the old bill are trying it on,if you had a one acre field and you put a high seat on it then it would be safe.i used to shoot a .243 for deer on a field that was no more than 4 acres, and that was checked by the FLO and that was in Avon & Somerset an d there aren't many as bad as them.
